Hello everyone,

I recognize this might be a dumb post, but I just really want to make sure everything's ok. I just adopted Lily about 1.5 weeks ago and when I took her to the exotics vet on Saturday, she was given a clean bill of health. I've been noticing that she closes/squints her eyes like in the video attached. Sometimes it's when I'm holding her, but it's also at other random times, like floor time. Is she just content, or should I be concerned? I've seen a little bit of milky fluid with her eyes, which I've read is normally cleansing fluid, and whenever I recheck, the fluid is always gone, so I'm assuming that's not a concern.

There is no such thing as "a dumb post" if you don't know you don't know. I can't see anything to be worried about in that video my piggies do the same thing. You are right when you say that the milky fluid produced by the eys in normal cleaning fluid. Lily has been given a clean bill of health at the vets and that is great.

I'm probably quick to worry because I had a piggie pass away in August, and it felt like everything went downhill so quickly.

There may be a minute hay dust particle in the eye that should be washed out in the next eye clean with the milky fluid (which gets reabsrbed via the tear duct.
Any watery fluid/clear crusts are generally the indicator of an irritation/non-ulcerating injury or infection. This can come with squinting and/or in-drawn painful eyes or reddened conjunctiva, and in this case, it should be promptly seen by a vet.

I hope that this helps you? Learning what is normal and what not is a life long process. ;)

There’s no such thing as a dumb question.
You will probably find that there’s someone else with the same question so you help them without realising.
Keep asking

She just looks relaxed to me. I wouldn't worry. White cleaning fluid is normal as well. And never be afraid to ask, there's no such thing as a dumb question!

If it seems that it's mainly one eye that squints, is that more of a concern?

I can’t see the video myself (it won’t let me open it), but if you are at all concerned, then it is best to see a vet. It is always best to get something checked and it be nothing, than leave it and it turn into something more.

I have seen the video and she looks like she is just enjoying a cuddle, she is very chilled. Her eyes look nice and clear to me. Never worry about asking any questions because we are all here to learn and have fun too 😆

Ok so I've kept an eye on it, and I can pretty confidently say it's mostly her left eye, and it happens pretty frequently. She was even doing it just now while eating. However, I don't see any other symptoms besides the left eye squinting. Any thoughts?

If you are at all worried a trip to the vets may be in order. We can't diagnose what it is (nor are we allowed to) as we aren't vets. A vet would rather see a healthy pet with an anxious owner than an ill pet with an owner that has left it too long. If nothing else it'll put your mind at rest.

That's true. I was already thinking I'd probably call the vet tomorrow. Thanks!

Turns out she scratched her eye. It wasn't super serious, but she was given antibiotic drops to help it heal. Thank you all for your advice!
