Cloudy Eye

I noticed that Cookie has a cloudy eye. Does that just show that she is blind in one eye? Obviously I
mind but if she is then does anyone have any advice if she is?

Is the cloudiness on the surface? In this case, it is an eye ulcer as the result of a scratch or poke and needs to be seen and treated by a vet.

If the cloudiness is inside the eye, then you are looking at a cataract, which is untreatable in guinea pigs. Cataracts usually develop over a time, so piggies can get used to the gradual loss of their sight and learn to compensate with their other senses. Very often, the second eye is going coming down with another cataract within weeks/months of the first one.

Sadly, I have just lost the last members of my dedicated cataract group due to old age, but blind/sight impeded piggies can still live a normal life.

I am going to bring her to the vet Monday can she wait until then?

Is it an ulcer? The sooner you can treat, the less painful and the safer for the eye. Eye infections come on very quickly, but they thankfully usually heal off pretty quickly, too.
 
Yeah it depends if it was gradual...more likely cataracts or quite sudden? My Badgers eye went really cloudy within a day or two...he had a bit of my stuck in his eye, once that was out and I gave him eye drops for 5 days he was completely fine, eye back to normal :)
 
Well I first noticed about two days ago and now it is looking worse. I can't bring her to the vet till Monday or maybe Tuesday. She is acting normal but I don't know if she is truely in pain.
 
Is she squinting with that eye (does it seem 'smaller'), and does it seem very watery? All are symptoms of irritation.
 
To be honest Badgers eye looked fine apart from being cloudy, no signs of pain or irritation. Felt so bad when I realised there was hay stuck in there!

I not to sure. She is acting completely normal eating, drinking and she still goes up and down the ramp. There is a little bit of red around it. Also the soonest I can bring her to the vet it Tuesday they are completely booked up tomorrow. I am hoping she will is alright to then.
 
They'll put a drop of green (I think it's green) dye in her eye to check for ulcers, and shine a light into her eye to see if there is a reaction, maybe prescribed eye drops if she has scratched her eye. Try not to worry, i'm sure she'll cope xx
If she gets worse, take her in sooner x

Thanks. I am trying not to worry but I can't really help it. She is very brave and acting as if nothing happened.
 
Just try pulling the eye lid down and look really carefully for a piece of hay, I could barely see it, just a tiny bit in bottom corner and when I finally got it it was a few cm long and had got wrapped all around his eye!
 
Sounds like he might need the drops, if you can get him to the vets tomo, that would be much better for him. In the meantime, bathe his eye with cotton wool soaked in cold tea (no added milk, just a tea bag left to soak in hot water that's gone cold), and see how he goes :)
 
I was able to get a last minute appointment this evening at five. @Wiebke will she be alright ir will she have to be put to sleep.

No I was worried it was a tumor behind the eye as it looked it. No they put the green drops and they saw it was an ulcer. She had a dose of pain killers and is on antibiotics and some drops. I think it is baytril. I am delighted she will be ok. I have seperated her from the others for a day or two. She is a bit cross with me for getting an injection but she is alright now with a chunk of cucumber!:tu:

Ok, I will see what I can do. They vet said that she may not like the taste of baytril so put a tiny bit of Ribena in it so she likes the taste. Of course I completely trust my vet but I am just wondering whether that is ok. She only the littlest tiniest bit though. I don't know.
