Cloudy Eye

Just arrived home from work and saffy was a little quiet and seemed to gave a sticky eye. Lifted her out and her left eye is a little cloudy. Booked in at vets for 4.45, should i just leave be or is there anything i can do.
 
Oh no, sorry to read this. We have had more than our fair share of eye problems here and I'd leave it until the vet has seen it too. Healing vibes. Hope it's nothing serious.
 
you really shouldn't do anything yourself when it comes to the eyes, so definitely wait to see the vet :)
 
Okay, its an ulcer. No idea what she has done. Chloramphenicol eye ointment for 5 days then back to the vet. Complicated as we go away on sat, sis in law looking after both of them so i will have to ask her to take them. Saffy is sulking at me now cos i have put the ointment in.
 
Oh dear, not good news for Saffy, and typical just before you go away. Hope the ointment works its magic.
 
hope the eye ointment will help. it should look alot better by the time you go away if the treatment is working as it should, so hopefully you can relax when away and your sister in law will have a quick and easy vet trip :)
 
She seems bright as a button and is munching away. I'll put the second lot of ointment in before we go to bed.
 
Any tips on getting ointment in the ete would be grately appreciated, I'm sure drops would havd been easier. Thank you.

I would advise asking for Chloramphenicol eye drops tomorrow from the vets. I can't see how you can get ointment into an eye.... Maybe a prescription error, it is usually drops for pokes in my experience
 
Dito, Chloramphenicol is very good, l have used it many times both for my pigs and myself when l have an eye problem
though once the bottle /tube (diferant concentrations ) it is only good for a few days , not sure how many , best look at
the leaflet that comes with the med

store in fridge

though when you use it on a pig , let it reach room tempreture so that it not to cold for your pig

TBH the vet did say one drop 3 times a day so i was surprised to find it was ointment he had given. I will ring the vet today. Thank you.

Yeah sounds like a mistake on their part... Ointment tends to be prescribed for eyelids and things like that...
 
The vet we normally see has gone elsewhere so we saw another vet at the same surgery....not really impressed....he didnt weigh her which would be a good gauge for her wellbeing when she goes back next week. He also didnt make a fuss of her or anything, I'm not used to that. I have booked her in with a senior vet at another branch if the same practice. We have seen him before with another piggie and he was great. She has had 4 doses now (3 ointment and one eye drop)and no worse so fingers crossed she should start improving. She hasnt list her appetite. Lol.

Pleased you have drops now, they should help. Eyes always seem to look worse before looking better. Glad she is still eating.
 
Update. We are away on holiday and internet is rubbish so we have had to go in wetherspoon for wifi! Sis in law took saffy back to the vet last night, he is pleased with the improvement but need to carry on with the drops. Sge has another appt next weds as she mayneed different eye drops to treat the blood vessels in her eye- thats what sis in law said. I will be taking her to this appt.
 
Been to the vet again today and saffy s eye ulcer is healed, no more drops. The vet showed me a small scar at the very top of her eye which is the only damage she has been left with. He says that she was lucky it was at thw outer edge as it will not impair her vision and these tend to heal a lot better than if she had damaged the middle of her eye. A job well done and i am sure she will be pleased abot no more drops. Oh and she pee'd all over me in the vets, it was like a hose pipe.lol.

My guinea pig Zebedee has recently had a corneal ulcer caused by hay perforation. It has taken 5 weeks of chloramphenicol eye drops 3 times a day plus oral baytril to heal but it HAS healed! I was fearing that the eye would have to be removed but persevered with the eye drops on the advice of my vet. Just to add, he was taken to the vet on the day the injury happened and no time was lost re treatment

Think it depends where on the eye the poke is. My vet said that if it was in the middle it takes longer to heal. Glad zebedee recovered.
