So this is just a quick question concerning my baby guinea pig, Olive. Yesterday afternoon, I noticed that one eye was a little bit sticky (not glued shut but just slower to open and close than the other one). I'd seen this in baby guinea pigs before so I wasn't worried. I checked her eye again this evening though, and one half of it was very cloudy - kind of milky and blue looking. I noticed a small piece of hay or something was stuck to the surface of the eye and I managed to remove it. Olive is acting completely normally; lively, happy, screeching for her veggies at all the normal times. She does not seem to be in pain and I'm pretty sure she can see fine out of that eye since she closes it when I bring my finger close to it. Basically I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced this before and if it cleared up or if she needs to see a vet. Thank you! x

I'd bring her to the vet just incase there is hay stuck further in her eye and prescribe drops so her cloudy eye doesnt get infected hope she gets better soon

Yes, a trip to the vet is definitely needed. It sounds like her eye may be damaged by the hay and this can lead to a nasty infection. It's a bit of an occupational hazard of being a guinea pig and spending life immersed in dried grass. It's good that she is basically her normal self (and sending you running for the veg 😆) however, because they are prey animals, guinea pigs are absolute experts at hiding illnesses. Good luck with the vet; hopefully she will soon be speeding towards recovery.

She needs to see a vet urgently. A cloudy eye is the start of an ulcer and will be very painful. If you don't get it treated it will get worse and may lead to the eye needing to be removed. My vet always sees eye problems the same day. The vet will put special dye in it to see how deep the damage to the eye is and then prescribe eye drops. As @Whortleberry has already explained piggie hide pain very well until often it is too late to do anything about it.

Please get her to the vets as soon as you can, as a cloudy eye is a sign of a problem that needs veterinary assistance. Eyes can go bad very quickly so please don’t leave it

Hello! Thanks for all the replies. I got her to the vet yesterday morning and the vet said it was a minor ulcer in her eye and gave me drops to give her three times a day. He said it's very common and should clear up quickly. Thanks for the advice xx
