Help. One of my youngsters has a cloudy eye. Fairly sure it was not there yeaterday. It seems like she is not able to see out of it. Any ideas?
Thanks

If the surface is cloudy, your piggy has an eye infection. Please have it seen by a vet, in case there is something stuck in the eye and the cornea is injured (ulcerated).

Thankfully, eye infections clear up as quickly as they come on. You'll probably be given a gel by your vet. The best way to get the gel in is for me by sitting the piggie on my lap in front of a plate of food, wait until it is absorbed in order to get it into the painful eye.

Make sure that you have some fleece or towel in the hutch or cage, as the gel is sticky - you don't wan't to get more stuff sticking to the eye!

The eye clouds naturally whenever it is injured or "invaded" (for want of a better word for the presence of foreign bodies!). This helps the eye heal quicker, by allowing it to rest, so the pig has much less vision in that eye until it has improved.

The eye will need examining to determine if there is an injury, infection or foreign body present. It's fairly likely that a simple hay poke caused a slight injury, in which case you only need to worry about monitoring the progress of the eye as it heals. An antibiotic eye ointment - such as Optrex Infected Eyes (for humans, from pharmacies), or a veterinary prescription one such as Fucithalmic Eye Drops - can help significantly whether an infection is present or not.

Whilst the cloudy eye is almost certainly the result of an infection or injury, I have seen young pigs who have developed cataracts "over-night"
