Cloudy Eye

Hey,

I have just been doing a basic health check on my piggies whilst I clean their hutch out - and one of my girls seems to have a cloudy eye. The edge of the eye is a little damp, as if there has been a small amount of discharge, but not a lot. I'm not sure how long she has had it, but I didn't notice it when doing their usual clean etc a couple of days ago, or their usual feed yesterday.

She's always been skittish, so I can't tell if she is more skittish than usual or not.

A quick check around the eye, I can't see anything thats lodged in it or anything?

My mum is my transport and is currently on holiday. I'm also kind of in the sticks at the moment (as house sitting for her) - so have no access to public transport, so the earliest vet appointment I can get in their vets is on Weds. I'm trying to contact the local vet (which I can taxi to and from) to see if I can squeeze in there...but currently can't get through.

Anyone got any idea what this could be, or what I could in the mean time?
 
Can you get some photos? If you cannot get to the vets right away you could get some eye drops from the chemist, you would need to tell them they are for you and for conjunctivitis.
One drop 2/3 times aday for the next 5 days should help. If you are unsure or it doesn't clear then you will have to take your piggy to the vets.
 
Ok...so whilst trying to get her to sit still for two seconds for a photo, I noticed something starting to protrude from under her eye...let her wriggle for a few seconds more and it came out further. Managed to get a pair of tweezers to it and it was a giant hay husk!

It must have literally been right in her eye, as that was 100% not visable when I first checked her over!

Hoping that was the main cause..and now its out, it'll start to heal.

Going to keep her appointment with the local vets on Tuesday,s o she can have it checked over again and we can make sure there isn't any more serious damage.

Would it still be an idea to get her some drops? Or should I just let it heal now we (hopefully!) know what the issue was?

Thanks to you for such prompt responses :) And to Suzy for her message! I'm such a worrier when it comes to my girls and it bothers me when I can't get them to a vet as soon as I see something wrong!
 
The hay will be why her eye went cloudy, just keep an eye on it but it should heal now, It will be alittle runny for a while as the eye flushes itself. The drops would have helped to flush anything out of the eye but youve got it out already.
 
If there is any damage it must be seen by a vet immediately as piggies can very easily lose eyes from injuries/infections in their eyes. I can't emphasize this enough; there are several people on here that have sadly had piggies with severe eye infections that have resulted in the loss of the eye & in some cases the surgery although successful has resulted in the loss of the piggy afterwards.

I have successfully used Brolene eye drops on my piggies in the past, but only after removing the foreign object immediately & very carefully without damaging the eye. At no point had mine got to the cloudy stage. If your pig's eye is already cloudy there could be damage so I would advise seeing a vet before Tuesday if you can as you will need antibiotic eye drops, only from the vet.

Thought I would give you guys an update as piggy saw the vets today...

Eye is fine! There is still a tiny amount of cloudyness, but the vet is note remotely worried. He said she did have a slightly ulcer on the eye, but that was already healing, as was the damage caused by the hay husk.

No infection and he was happy with the action we had taken in the mean time.

The vet laughed at me as I took her along with one of the other piggies, as I didn't want her to get lonely!

Only just seen this, in the past mine have got a grass seed in their eye which causes it to cloud over, I usually bathe daily and dont bother with vets, unless complications arise and eithin a few days the eye is fine :)

It should heal now, if the vet is happy then dont worry just keep an eye on it (sorry about the pun).
