This is a picture of clovers face (I hope its worked as its the first time ive posted a picture!)
She is a 4/5 week old piggy with what looks like a fungal infection. Initially she was treated for mites which was ineffective so I took her back to the vets yesterday, who tbh was pretty useless. I have now ordered some kwench lotion after taking advise from Chrissie at gg which I am going to start using today (after a patch test). If the picture has worked can anybody advise whether or not it looks fungal? Thanks x

I dont know tbh but others will, sending healing vibes, hope its sorted soon.
 
Personally I am not convinced that this is the classic fungal ringworm from the picture..there is a suggestion of either a yeast (fungal) or bacterial involvement (or both) because of the appearance of the brown crusting The other thing that comes to mind is that there may be an ear mite infection which she is trying to scratch and has injured herself and subsequenty the area has become infected

I would strongly suggest you go to a vet who has more experience and who would do a skin scrape/culture/ear examination to confirm exactly what it is you are dealing with before giving any further treatments

The nearest one I know of to you is in Edgbaston (although they have a branch in Northfield, the exotics people are based in Edgbaston)

Suzanne I've just realised that this is a follow on from your previous threads in both Health and illness and guinea pig chat.

It would be more helpful to us (and you would receive more accurate advice) if you kept to one thread that contains all the history.

For instance: I take it this is the same piggie who has had tea tree cream applied? Have you stopped this and are you now applying sudocream as per the previous thread? This will influence the appearance of the lesions in any photos, could explain why her skin is so red and ulitmately miselad forum members into making suggestions as to the cause that are incorrect

I re-iterate what I said in reply to your previous thread on Health and Illnes ...this piggie is very young and you really need to get her to a vet for a proper diagnosis and suitable treatment rather than keep starting threads on here asking forum members to diagnose/suggest alternative medications and then using them on her for a few days before starting another thread.

I appreciate your frustration and concern to get your piggie better...but a cavy savvy vet visit really is the best (and safest) way forwards for this little girl.

there does seem to be a lot of debris in her ear, which I presume would indicate ear mites? there are another couple of small scabs on her head though, but like * said could be fungal/bacterial as well! I will see how she goes over the weekend and If no improvement will get her to vets for skin scrape x
 
Oh this looks exactly like what my fudge had.
My vet said it wad bacterial, and after trying a few things which didn work, we tried something which isnt licenced for gpigs but dogs and cats.

Its called canaural, and is used usually as ear drops! It worked an absolute treat though. Very easy to put on, and fudge found it quite soothing :)
 
pebble, I am well aware I need to see a cavy savy vet - I have made 2 vet visits so far and have only had her a week! I am trying my best and really would appreciate it if you weren't so condesending! also, I am new to the forum and am using it the best way I know how. I apologise if this has caused confusion. I feel the tone of your comment is inappropriate and unnecessary, I was under the impression this forum was meant as a means of support and not to make people feel stupid?! I am in no means using it as tool to try and treat clover, I was just looking for suggestions.

I'm sorry you feel my posts on your threads are condescending and I certainly don;t think you are stupid or that i have implied such. I have provided helpful advice, prevented possibly inappropriate treatment being given to your guinea pig in view of her age, possibly prevented a misdiagnosis and provided a good vet reference.

There are laws governing the treatment of animals and in particular the self-treatment of animals without vet involvement/seeking appropriate veterinary advice. This forum, its owners and the people who post on it are all bound by those laws and sometimes, if a thread or situation starts sailing close to the wind, things need to be said to ensure it is clear to an outsider that no-one is advocating or assisting (albeit unknowingly) someone in contravening those laws.

You will find that is why very often, the only advice you will receive is "go to a vets". The more experienced members of the forum will try and give you an idea of the issues/possible diagnostics/possible treatments you need to discuss with your vet.

However we do see threads where users are told to go to a vets and don;t (often citing money/transport/logistics as the reason...and continue to seek advice for self-treatments often starting new posts in other areas of the forum). The forum has to be seen to be acting within the law concerning health and illnesss advice and you will therefore find that if a poster has been told to see a vet , doesn;t confirm that is their next course of action and continues to post/self-treat then the replies will become more strongly worded.

It might be worth reading through the stickies at the top of the Health and illness board as they have all been put there at some time or other for a reason and you will see that they address the issues I have raised including one thread per pig, seeking vet treatment etc etc


Finally you have to remember that it is not just you that will read your threads, but other members of the public seeking advice in similar situations. Misdiagnosis /wrong treatments being posted by inexperienced posters (or experienced posters who have not been given all the facts) coud have consequences for other guineas further down the line.

I stand by my posts for all the above reasons...but I am genuinely sorry if they have caused you offence.
