Sadly, our beautiful little pet we have loved and cared for for 7 years was put to sleep by a vet this morning. Generally, the older we get we are more prone to various illnesses and in this respect guinea pigs are no different to humans.

Over the past 5 or 6 weeks COFFEE deteriorated. Until this time she was fine until one day we discovered her in her cage flat on her back with her feet and hands facing the ceiling. She was desperately trying without success to get back onto her feet. We had to turn her over. From that time she seemed to be paralysed in her hind quarters. For some time she was able to drag herself around her cage using her hands to reach her food and water but in the last 3 weeks she has been more or less totally paralysed except for an ability to eat. We had to coax and hand feed her. She had no quality of life and as our vet said sometimes it is kinder to the animal to let go.

Although she was a fine specimen she was at the end of her natural life. She has gone to meet her friends.

Thank you all for your kind support.

Sorry to hear of your loss of Coffee. Sometimes Euthanasia is the final act of love we can show our little ones. We have had to make this painful decision once more this week, it never gets easier. Huge hugs to you

You have my sympathy. Exactly the same thing happened to my lovely 8 year old piggy, Peeps, last month. She was still wheeking for her food and eating but could no longer move around. The paralysis also started in her hind legs. It was so hard to take her to the vets to be PTS but I didn't want her to suffer and eventually not be able to eat. You did the best thing for Coffee.

Sorry to read about Peeps too. We have a rainbow bridge section if either of you would like to leave a memorial to your piggies.
