Cold or uri ?

Today I found one of my guinea pigs poorly not eating or drinking on his own and making wheezing/rattling noises from his chest/lungs also had a green crusty substance around his nose and crust around his eyes, unfortunately I couldn't get him to the vets today and they are closed tomorrow so I will have to get him in first thing monday , does this sound like he has a cold or uri, will he be ok until monday I have been syringe feeding him and giving him water he's also had pain relief I've been so upset all day about it I know feel terrible and horrible cause I couldn't get him to the vets today 😭😭😭😢 also what sort of treatment will he need ? Please say he will survive I'll never forgive myself if he doesn't 😭😭😭

He needs antibiotics asap!. Might survive until monday, if you keep ringing your vet they should mention an out of hours emergency vet on the answer machine. Failing that, get googling for vwts open 24/7.

Its not a cold. Guinea pigs dont get colds.

Unfortunately I do not drive so cannot get to a emergency vet, but will ring first thing Monday as soon as they open is there anything I can do in the mean time ?

If hes not eating, keep on syringe feeding him, syringe water also, only about a 1/4 ml at a time for food and water. Too much can go into the lungs which will not be good atall. Keep him warm aswell. Can you not get a taxi?

This is as much advice i can give, I'm sick myself at the moment, i will have to leave other members with this..hope he gets better👍

Unfortunately not, he’s now started taking nibbles on his nuggets, and moving around more I have him in a warm place with lots of hay to keep him comfortable xx

He’s started nibbling on his nuggets and I’ve been syringe feeding and giving him small amounts of water at a time, what could of caused for this to happen because he is an outdoor pig but he always has lots of hay, Resh food and water clean dust free bedding heavy duty hutch cover I’m so upset 😢😢

I'm not sure what has happened to your little piggie. He is nibbling slightly you say? At this point i'm not that sure, I just hope that your piggie gets better 🧸❤💙💕

Yes he’s started eating an walk-in around more, I just hope he makes it to Monday I feel terrible I can’t get there sooner xx

Some pigs are just more prone that others to uri's, and you need to act fast before is turns to pneumonia. Could be many things that caused it.

Thats good, keep going until monday. Dont leave him too long during the nights, i only let mine go without food for about 4 hours when I'm.sleeping
 
Hi everyone I’ve just woken up to check and he’s drank water from his bottle in the night, eaten more of his food on his own and is walking around more even ran away like he usually does when I go to pick him up (he was mistreated before I got him) I got a hot water bottle underneath the blanket for him is there anything else I can do now before I get him a vet appt ?
 
I'm not that sure sorry. He sounds ok but they do hide there illnesses quiet well.

Def not an op thats for sure. I have had an old boar with 3 uri's and once pneumonia, he pulled through all with anitbiotics. I cant remember what one for the pneumonia, but baytril killed the uri's
 
Sorry probably should of added that yes they are best friends they hate being away from each other, I have other guinea pigs but they’re not near the pig with the problem how does it spread ?
 
I'm not actually sure, maybe through the air or by stuff you touch and then touch the other guinea pigs. Just keep your hands clean between handling both.
 
Update Walter is now eating, drinking and moving around like he usually does also going to the toilet, his eyes now have the sweet sparkle back in them and no crust or mucus around his nose or eyes, also he's no longer making a wheezing/rattling noise

Great news! Still go to the vet just to be sure though
