Yesterday morning he was absolutely fine. In the evening he was just sitting in the enclosure and didn't eat his food. We took him straight to the vet and he was diagnosed with a respiratory infection as his breathing was laboured.
Tonight, he was the same but felt cold. My Husband had Colin on his lap to warm him up, which he did. He put Colin back in the enclosure and he fell on his side. We picked him up and my daughter phoned the emergency vets but, as she was speaking to them, Colin just passed away.
Sadly these things happen no matter what we do. Guinea pigs are good at hiding illness so sometimes we don’t know anything is wrong until it’s too late.
He was a very handsome boy.
Perhaps it was pneumonia, that can come on and become fatal very quickly. You did everything you could in the circumstances. Hope your other piggie is ok.
I'm so sorry! Unfortunately that quick decline from seemingly fine to passing has happened to me twice now. Pigs are very good at hiding illnesses and sometimes once something appears off it is a matter of hours only.
I am so sorry that Colin has suddenly passed away. Sometimes whatever the infection is can just overcome them and it is too much for them. He lived a wonderful and blessed life with you and Hettie. And you were with him at the end. Huge hugs xx
Well done for putting Hettie needs first, many of us on the forum know how hard this can be. It's natural that you are missing Colin you are grieving. When I got Rusty for Bracken I couldn't warm to him at all, I think it took 2 or 3 months, I feel quite ashamed of this as he is a lovely boar, I have to keep reminding myself it was alright to feel like that. You've done all you can for Hettie now be try to be kind to yourself, take things slowly.
