Hi all, Bruce and and Treacle ar doing well But ... I noticed this last night and this morning that there wee seems very brown and red. I'm starting to panic. I have lined my cage with white puppy training pads as the sawdust was making them itch like crazy. Both are eating, and popcorning. No weight loss either. Help? What could it be? X

Are they actually weeing red/brown or is it just what it looks like on the puppy pads? Mine wee clear, but after a while it oxidises in/on puppy pads and looks brown.

I have had a guinea pig wee blood (which was absolutely terrifying!) and it is very different colour, it is very red and looks very much like blood, where as when it is just oxidised wee on the puppy pads, it looks dark brown.

If you suspect it IS blood, then take them to the vets for a check over xx

I agree with above poster - wee on puppy pads oxidises and can look dark brown or a bit reddish.

If you are really worried - the best thing to do is put them in separate plastic containers - I have pet carriers for this - but cheap washing up bowls will do . ... and wait !

Here's a photo of my puppy pads after floor time today 20151215_215121.webp

It sounds rather like oxidised pee that is nothing to worry about. It is very normal in drying pees and only happens on contact with the air. If there is blood in the wee, it usually manifests as either red dots in the middle of a puddle or a reddish ring around a differently coloured pee.

Just got back from the vets- who were amazing and very guinea pig savvy- the vet specialty is guinea pigs :-) No stones or URI's but a urine infection which we think is poor Bruce (again) treating both the boys though just incase. Metacam, bladder anti-inflammatory, vit c tablets, And a recombination to buy Burges Timothy hay and pellets. Also found out that Brucey has a heart murmur which has never been picked up! Makes me so mad. I think Brucey will just be a poorly guinea more often. But he still my fighter. Uploaded a pic as thought it could be useful for others. Thanks again guinea pig forum what would u do without you! X

Hi, regading Vit C, red pepers are probabaly the best way to give a pig vit c,
l give it to my pigs every other day

Thank you for that. Bruce loves peppers, but treacle won't go any where near them. He's a fussy little one. Trying to get guinea pig drugs into them was fun... Not! Lolx

Here are tips for medicating: Administering Medications

When you are dealing with a UTI, try to get as much water into them as you can in one or two sessions each day. Never give more than half a syringe full at once (i.e. one mouthful) and make sure that it has been swallowed first before you give more. This helps to flush the bacteria out as quickly as possible. Feeding a bit more mildly diuretic veg like cucumber, lettuce or fresh grass`in the first 2-3 days can also help to get the acute symptoms down sooner. Increased vitamin C can help boost the immune system.

It is good that you had a scan and know that there are no stones. What medications did your vet give you?
