Something was going on with Treacle's kidneys. The last few clean outs since she was pts, have been a lot drier, and a lot less smelly. Sometimes, it's not until they're gone, that suddenly things become clearer :(
I don't think in her case intervention would have saved her, she hid her issues so well, that when they became apparent, it was already too late. I never actually witnessed an increase of drinking, or urinating, her problem have been so gradual over time, how could I not have seen it? :(

What can vets do for kidneys that are not functioning as they should anyway, do you know?

I'm sorry to hear this BonBon
Please don;t think you were to blame in any way.

One of the most common causes of death in guinea pigs is long-term kidney failure as they get older. There is no intervention except a PTS in a timely fashion because full-blown kidney failure is not pleasant!

There is also a genetic predisposition in piggies to this condition that hasn't been pinned down yet.

I have invested in urine test sticks and monitor all my pigs wee on a monthly basis...but still don;t have any further understanding of this condition.

If a pig develops signs of infection - I ask the vet to culture and treat it - but I also ask for an Xray later - because infection can cause stones in the future. I have had to make the decision to put pigs under GA and take Xrays and bloods to confirm diagnosis ...or just to accept they are elderly pigs. Each is decided on the situation at the time.

I have quite a few elderly piggies who consume a lot of water and wee a lot. Apart from this - there is nothing else wrong - apart from a few stinkies on cleaning out - it's just old age/kidney's failing.

The Piggie health knowledge bank is increasing every day - all we can do is our best at the time...and learn from it .........which you have done!

Hugs

aw I'm so sorry. I have a piggy that is in some kind of kidney failure at the moment. Oscar had two bouts of blood in wee about 10 months apart, with no signs of pain just literally spotted the blood in the cage. On the second occasion i took it further and he was xrayed and a stone was found, but sadly when they operated they couldnt get it out as it is lodged in the tube leading from bladder to kidney.

Since his second bout of bleeding his water intake has increased dramatically and he pretty much hogs the water bottle all night. I know that i will lose him one day and it could be any day, but as yet he is showing no signs of any pain whatsoever and is maintaining his weght.

these piggies test us dont they? sorry you lost Treacle x

Honestly I dont think you can blame yourself, kidney failure is not something i am aware of any treatment for. I lost a cat to it recently and was told there was no available treatment. X
