hello

just wondered how long it took piggies roughly to come round from an anesthetic?

nelson went in to be neutered today and apparently he is wobbly but coming round. i can pick him up after work even though i want to go get him now.

they were very good this morning and said they couldnt guarantee him to be safe until 6 weeks after the op so I'm impressed.

oh bless him, I'm so worried about taking Peter in but will booking the appointment as soon as I know when we're collecting him. Hope he comes round quickly and is ok

I would leave him there until later. He's very unlikely to have problems in the hours after if he's come round ok, but it can happen and he's better off under verinary observation for a while.

i will be leaving him there til about 5.30.

they phoned me at half 12 and said they had just finished and i phoned about quarter to 3 and they said he was still coming round. just wondered if that was normal. they didnt seem worried.

Kelly do you have any idea when your collecting him? i haven't done a lot of work at all today, good job they are quite laid back lol

I had Yorkie neutered 2 weeks ago and i picked him up when he was about 3 hours post op, he was very wobbly on his feet and not at all with, he was so sound asleep at one point that i thought he had died. He was back to himself by the next morning, but anaesthetic can stay in the system for up to 24hrs. All the best of luck and keep an eye on the wound for any post op infection xx

thank you i shall be keeping a close eye on him dont worry :)

Hiya, Having had a fewpost anaesthetic piggies :( i would say that is totally depends on the piggie how quickly they get back to normal. 2 of our boys were up and eating within an hour or so. whereas a couple were still a little dopey early evening. However the vet wouldn't normally send them home until they had been moving and eating. Aneasthetic can stay for 24 hours but in my experience all my boys have been pretty much back to normal by the next day at the latest. I think that IF they are not back to almost themselves and eating by the next day, certainly after an op for something non-illness related, i would get the critical care going and back to the vet just to be safe. I have had a bad experience when a non piggie vet told me not to worry about a piggie when i rang (as he was still dopey 1 day and a bit later (abcess op)) because it would just be the anaesthetic and then he deteriotrated and i lost him.Paul was picking at food so i was told he would be ok and I had to demand to be given science recovery that evening when he was eventually taken in to their hospital it was too late :( Hope he heals quickly and the 6 wheeks fly by for him! :(|)

thank you i shall see how he is when i pick him up.

he just looked so small (he weighs about 600g) and his balls hadnt dropped as such they were inside him.

i shall syringe feed him if he isnt eating at home. I'm hoping when he is home next to his friends he will feel better

Here are tips for post op care, including post neuter advice at the bottom: http://www.guinealynx.info/postop.html

Here is more than you may want to know about neutering in all its aspects:
http://www.cavyspirit.com/neutering.htm

Even the same guinea pig can react differently to anaesthetics and can come out once well and once not so well; I've had that happening to me.

PS: If you happen to run into problems with a nasty abscess or internal infections (I really hope not!), please ask your vet for zithromax as antibiotic. It is magic in that respect and can make all the difference between life and death (apart from dedicated nursing). I am sure that my Hywel wouldn't have made it through the weekend had I not had it to hand by sheer coincidence.
This is the vet who has researched it. Simon Maddock in Northampton if your vet needs a referral: http://www.catandrabbit.co.uk/contact_us.htm

Best of luck for Nelson!

thank you he is home now, picked him up and had a little cuddle is was shaking slightly, put him back in his pen with a fresh towel on the bottom, fed him a bean, a slice of cucumber some parsley and brocolli, he has eaten some bean, parsley and cucumber so for now i am happy.

he seems much better now he is home with familar smells and sounds.

have an antibiotic to give him twice a day starting tomorrow.

i'm so glad he is home.

That sound good if he is eating. He just needs keeping reasonably warm overnight and I'm are he'll be fine.

When Frazzle was neutered I rang at 1 and they said he was just coming round and to ring back at 3. I rang at 3 and they said he was awake but hadn't eaten much so they wanted to keep him in a bit longer to see if he eats. He had passed poos though which was good. I rang at 4 and they said he still hadn't eaten much but I could come at 5. Turned up and they brought him out and he was all floppy and not moving much, the nurse showed me how to syringe feed and gave me some critical care. Put him in his carrier and then on the way home I popped some fresh veg in his carrier, and half way through the journey I heard 'munch munch'. I think he knew he was going home and was happy to be out the vets. Got him home and he ate all his dinner. I had provided veggies to be fed after surgery which he'd nibbled but not much. I was just so happy to have him home :) He made a fully recovery with no complications, hope your guinea has the same experience!

thank you :) he has eaten a little, just had him out for cuddles in his sleeping bag and I'm so happy he peed on me first one in 3 hours, put him back and he is eating hay not great amounts but he is. had a quick lok and he loks bigger down there than before lol, I'm sure he will be fine but we all worry :) thanks guys xx

Just give him his favourite veg and time to relax :). What are you bedding him on?

i have he has parsley, beans, pepper, broccoli and celery. he is on a nice white towel with a bed and snuggle sac and an upside down shoebox and a tunnel :)

Looks good so far - what you want is interest in food and proof that the innards are working. Please don't be surprised if there are few and funny looking poos at first after all the meds from the operation.

Within about 6 hours Fraz had done 25 poos. So that's a nice rough guide for you :)) will vary though I'm guessing!

thank you for that lol

well he has been home for nearly 4 hours and we have two nice normal healthy looking poops and he has been nomming on hay for the last 15-20 mins :)

sorry giving you all a step by step guide as we go. i shall stop it now!

here he is look, how goregeous is he!!
