Hi all

As some of you may know, I lost my gorgeous guinea pig Missy last week. Her sister Maisy is now all alone and the vet told me, I should get her a companion.

I went to pets at home today to have a look in the adoption centre and spoke to one of the members of staff. She stated, because Maisy was content and had been on her own for over a week, I should not get another guinea pig. She said that as long as I get her out regularly, which I do anyway, she would be fine.

What does everyone else think? Not sure which advice to listen to?

I contacted the RSPCA yesterday to ask for information on the guinea pigs they have who need rehoming and they said there is a little boy who needs to be rehomed with a female and he may be suitable as he is a similar age to Maisy.

I don't know what to do :{ !

Help

x

GPs are herd animals by nature so i would go ahead and find a friend for Maisy but would you have room for 2 cages if they didnt get along?
some rescues would let you take your GP to choose her own friend,I know we do.
If the GP that the RSPCA has in is neutered it could possibly be the perfect solution

At the moment I don't think I would have room for another cage which is a shame.

It would be great if the RSPCA let me take Maisy in to see if she would bond with the little boy. He isn't available till the beginning of April as they have neutered him so won't be ready for a while.

I don't like the thought of Maisy being alone but don't want her to become distressed if I brought another guinea pig into the house :{ x

I would certainly let Maisy have the opportunity of a new companion.

If you get a piggy from the RSPCA or a rescue, then you will have to sign to say that if you are unable to care for it then you agree to return it to them. So if the friendship didn't work out and you were not able to get another cage, then they would be happy to have the piggy back.

A neutered, lonely boar looking for a friend would be a really good option, or a younger sow.

I am sure other members will also give their views. Hope all goes well.

I have to agree with what's already been said, Maisy ideally should have a friend & i'm sure the RSPCA would allow you to take her to meet their piggy when the time is right. It would be a perfect ending for both of them :)

Thanks everyone for all your advice.

I thought I should get her a friend too so was a little surprised that the lady at P@H said the opposite?!

I think I will phone the RSPCA again and see what they think about me taking Maisy to meet the little boy.

Thanks again everyone x

I'm surprised P@H didn't try to sell you a companion for her :) Petshop staff (whichever shop) are usually mis-informed on what is "right."
I've previously been told female piggies breed from 8wks & that 2 boars cannot be homed together-they wouldn't sell me 2 boys when i got Huxley & Hamish (this was before i found this forum & knew piggy rescues existed) as they weren't brothers. I bought them on separate days yet they did try to persuade me to buy the rabbit that Huxley was living with in the shop!

Have a look at Cracker on the RSPCA at Walsall website x). I travelled from Bristol to Walsall to get Milly and Molly from the RSPCA after having a local homecheck.

LucyWoo is the contact on here and the foster mum that I met when I collected Milly and Molly was fantastic.

Must admit, I was surprised aswell as thought they would want the money lol !

Before I picked the girls, I asked for advice from P@H and they said I shouldn't have 2 boys as they would fight, even if they were living together in the shop?!

To be honest, I don't really have much experience with guinea pigs apart from books etc but they did seem helpful at the shop. I'm determined to find out as much as I can about these beautiful little animals x

Thats so weird. Thats the guinea pig I enquired about from the RSPCA but they suggested Slash would be more suitable because of his age? Cracker looks exactly like Maisy apart from colour and I fell in love with him x
