Ok, I'm after a suggest please.

I know piggies like a bit of company, but since my daughters has been moved outside he doesn't get as much as he used to, so we are thinking about giving him some.

The two things we've come up are as follows -

We have two male rabbits, one of which is a lot more friendly than the other. I know that rabbits and guinea's can live together so, is this a valid option?.

The other is to get our piggie neutered, and get him a little lady friend.

So which do you think is the better of the two.

Live with a rabbit, or lady friend?

Thanks in advance,
Pete

Hi There,

Welcome to the forum, I am so glad your doing your research. Yes a long time ago people thought it was acceptable for Guinea Pig to live with Rabbits - Would you put a hamster and a Gerbil together or would you live with an ape?

They are two different species, they would not meet in the wild and they cannot communicate. The RSPCA has now revised there policies and also advise Rabbits and Guinea Pigs not to live together for numerous reasons.

It is very possible for him to find a male friend, where are you located?

We live in the Bedfordshire area(UK), and I thought that introducing another male is bad news. as Casper is 1yr, in October.

Males can live happily together - Suzygpr bonds males frequently so it can be done and some rescues will do it for you.

She has a thread and you can clearly see males do and can work together :)!

Hi and welcome!

It is great that you care so much about your piggy's happiness and are doing your research first!

I am sorry to say, but guinea pigs and rabbits should not live together for various reasons from different food requirements, transmittable diseases to the rabbit kick reflex; this is now officially being supported by the RSPCA. http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/rabbits.htm

While neutering is one option, I would strongly recommend going for another one first. Depending on where you are living, you can try and find a guinea pig rescue that offers "boar dating" for single/bereaved boars. Not all rescues do, however. If you are from outside Britain, rescues are sadly far and few in between. You may find this thread here from a rescue lady specialising in boar dating quite an eye opener and very entertaining at the same time: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=59233&highlight=boar+dating

You can always try to introduce a baby boar. However, if they can choose each other and be introduced under the watchful eyes of an experienced rescue lady, that would add a completely new level of stability to any boar bond, as it takes the most important ingredient of a stable relationship, character compatibility, into account. Often, having as big an age gap as possible can additionally help with preventing fall outs, especially those that happen when two thrown together boars hit the stroppy hormonal months between 4-12 months old.

How old is your boar and where are you located? We may be able to help you or recommend places you can turn to.

If you consider neutering, cross gender bonds are generally very stable once a boar has been accepted. As above - dating at a rescue can help find the right girl to create a truly loving bond. However, you need to be aware that there is a not inconsiderable risk of post op complications, so it matters very much to find an experienced vet. Your boy would also have to wait 4-6 weeks after an operation before he can be put with girls. The odd "golden shot" has been fired as late as five weeks post op!
Here is a link to the best information about all aspects of neutering:

PS: I have a neutered boar living currently 10 girls myself.

absolutly not with the rabbits!

I'm amazed at the quick replies, and knowledge you guys have out there...thank you all.

I like the idea of matching our little boy to another, but where, how long, and yes I have to ask...how much.

We live in the Bedfordshire area, so how does this work, and our there any people in or around my area.

But again thanks for all the amazing advise.
