I put a comment on a you tube video regarding a guinea pig in a swimming pool doing laps - i put on there how i thought it was cruel and that piggies are only supposed to be in an inch of water.

My response back from the user was

"are you kidding?!? they can swim really well...do your research. k thanks"

what are your opinions on this? I have guinea pigs for 18 years and i would NEVER do this to them . They may be able to swim around, but their little legs can get tired and i just think its plainly cruel.

I must admit I don't know if pigs can swim, but i would never do that either. i think i saw that video or if not it was one similar and flagged it as inappropriate. post the link on here so we can all have a look and comment.

Thats really bad, the poor little piggy in the pool seems to be being pulled around by currents and looks petrified :(
The one in the bath also seems scared and is obviously trying to get out, it keeps heading for the sides but cant get out :(

i agree - they only swim out of instinct to try and save themselves and to get out of the water - its not an enjoyable thing for them at all.

once i get home i'm going to reply to this person and have my say!

Yes you tube is blocked at my work too (boo hiss) but i will have a look at home. i looked on google then and the general consensus is that although piggys can swim, it should be done in very shallow water and you should be ready to scoop them out-but it is not recommended as like cats, although they can swim, they aren't really a fan of it. my two hate being bathed, one tried so hard to jump out of the sink, he was so distressed, and that was just in shallow water in the sink. i personally feel it may be very stressful for them.:{

I have replied, gone totally overboard in my comment but I am outraged. Guineas aren't natural swimmers at all. :(

God these sick people who do this just for their 30 seconds of 'fame' on youtube really make me angry.grrrrgrrrr
I have just left a comment.:(

lets all go in force! its awful isnt it, I'm glad I'm not alone in my thinking. Thanks guys.

Replied,

"It's a SURVIVAL instinct. They are not "recreational" swimmers and there is NO benefit in MAKING them swim. There is no point whatsoever in doing this other than to give the humans a jolly good laugh and distressing the animal in the process.

If you want to give your poor animal a bath do it in shallow water and if you want to watch swimming watch some re-runs of the Olympics."

I've watched the trampoline one but couldn't watch another. Just hearing the people laughing thinking that their guinea pig is enjoying it is enough to make me sick.

I don't really like youtube as there are some horrible things on there.

Haha Lorna I love your replies! I wish I had that I just go off on one! :D I've see the Trampoline one before and replied! Its not good! :( There is no respect in these sort of videos!

OMG these videos are just HORRIBLE! NOW THAT is animal cruelty I watched the 1st video the poor piggie was trying to get out. very sad., :... Oh, and did you notice how the person said "oh , you swim so much better than the last piggie! absolutely amazing how STUPID people are when it comes to these things. argghhh. I wonder what did happen to the "bad swimmer"? poor piggies. probably drowned , poor thing. the idiot.

and the 2nd video don;t even get me started. they were laughing at this poor piggie who was most likely scared to death, I didn;t even watch the whole thing, I saw enough. why do people think this is funny? this is what makes YouTuBE have its bad reputation. what is this world coming to?:)>>>grrrr

its disgusting isnt it. I don't know how these videos are allowed to be put on that site, but there we go. I will be replying to taht persons email tonight, i think they need to do some research first.

I no emily it is so horrible and guinea pis arnt meant to swim your don't even put that much in when you wash them.
They are sick people seriously

It's awful! Yeah their legs are actually pretty small to support them in water everyone with a brain can see that!

There are some VERY sick people around and these video's AND many others are just disgusting. I must admit that I am guilty of seeing if our rats liked water as I heard that rats liked to swim. I put them in shallow water but it was very clear from the start that they didn't like the water therefore I took them out straight away and never tried it again.

i recently had to bathe my 1 yo sow as she had very dry dandruffy hair/skin...i put her in the sink (in a washing up bowl) with enough water to come up to her chest.she really liked being in there!i thought she would hate it but i think she found it really relaxing! no she wasnt scared! she was looking about but not in a "get me out of here "way..i would never leave her unattended or put in enough water that she had to swim to stay afloat.
I'm not going to bathe her very often, just when she needs it as i know you can strip their hair and skin of the natural oils...i think if they like being in water great but make sure their legs can reach the bottom and they can get out when they have had enough

I have a camcorder and want to put it in the shed to see how the animals behave when we are not around. I think that would make brilliant viewing and tell us how they act within their own company.

I don't like videos that dont give respect or are there for us humans to laugh at. :(

That sounds like a fantastic idea Louise :) Would love to see it

What really bothers me is her comment that the pig in the video is a much better swimmer than ying ying...... I wonder if that pig is alive at all ...... I vote for taking her piggies away

what we all need to do is flag these as inappropriate (the button just under the video) if enough people flag it up, it may help it to get removed.

Lou i say this to my mum every night, i wish i had a webcam and when left the room and just watched them on it! would be fab!

I just watched the link and basically the guinea pig had no choice but to swim. It couldn't get out! The owner might think that the pig was enjoying it, but I doubt it very much! mallethead

Unfortunately, to the side of that link or the "lots and lots of guinea pigs" link was one about a python eating a guinea pig. I clicked on the video and a live guinea pig was being dangled over the snake in a glass cage! :... :{ .... I looked no further.

Over 287,000 people had watched that video! Now that is SICK!

Sick? Videos like this are posted on forums like this one ALL the time. I'm sure this one has been posted on here several times before. THAT is the reason it gets so many hits - not because people are deliberately searching for them.

That's the flip side - posting links like this on a forum like this gives the people that post such videos the attention they're obviously craving.

why dont they monitor the :x site! its great that you can watch some funny things on there etc but things like that should be taken off immediatly...
these people get a kick out of knowing that there are people out there getting offended.
i never go on these sites because i think that if i dont go on there, and other people like us ,that know that they put this sick stuff on there ,dont either then together it will help to close them down as they will get far fewer visits and wont be able to fund it ...

Guinea pigs like you said emily are ONLY ment to be put in water that is NO deeper then a inch .... I would never do that do a guinea pig as they could get really tired quick and could even drown if the water is to deep ! and to me it is also very cruel
