I've seen some pellets recently sold as complete pellets, just give them hay and fresh water as well. Are they really complete enough? I'm wondering if it would solve my holiday problems, I could ask my neighbour to top up the hay the water and the nuggets and she won't have to bother with fresh vegetables, she's registered blind so I want to make it as simple as possible.

i would not use these to replace veg, if you have a picture could you post it please? in my opinion fresh veg is very important, to help your neighbour you could prepare veg or maybe ask someone else to help?

The first thing to do would be to try your piggies on the nuggets and see f they like them!
Bunny is very popular here in Switzerland, and I will be honest and say none of my five piggies have ever liked any of their nuggets.

A lot will depend on how long you are away for too.
If it is just a few days then I would say they would be fine with unlimited hay, fresh water and nuggets.
Fresh veg is good, but nothing awful will happen if they go without for a few days.

The other option would be as BonnieandPoppy suggested and pre prepare small amounts of fresh food for them, and put it in containers in the fridge.
Your neighbour could then just empty one container of fresh veg in every second day?

I'm away for 10 days this time, usually its 5 or 6 and i leave pots of prepared veg, but i'm worried after that long the veg will have gone off and she'll give them mushy food without noticing.

I don't think pellets can ever replace fresh veg as they need the veg for their daily vitamin C.

Maybe you could choose veg that will keep longer? I sent ours to the guinea pig sitter with a bag of carrots and a cucumber because I knew these would keep for 5 days, not ideal long term but better than no veg! Or could you have some growing herb plants in a pot or seed tray your piggy sitter can pull a few strands off each day?

A balanced diet with pellets and hay will contain enough Vitamin C - guinea pig pellets have added Vit C. and as long as they are the complete type (as opposed to a muesli mix) then the guinea pig will be getting enough Vitamin C.

Oh OK. I'm no expert but here's what the experts say:

"Please include one high vitamin C veg, herb or fruit into your daily mix as guinea pigs cannot produce their own. Ideally you feed fresh foods in chunks, slices, strips or sprigs."
