Compost re-use paranoia...

Hello all - I've bought a supermarket basil plant for the piggies. I've split the plant into smaller plants and re-potted them in some pots I have and put them on the windowsill. In one of the pots I re-used compost that I had planted some old chive seeds in but the chives never germinated (it was very old seed). Just occurred to me now that chives being part of the onion family - will the compost be 'tainted' in any way by having chive seeds in it that would be poisonous/dangerous to the guinea pigs? Or am I being completely paranoid and ridiculous (not unheard of!)

There's all sorts in compost, our food is grown in it and we are all still here to tell the tale so I don't see it can do them any harm. People dig manure into their veg plots and eat root vegetables grown in the soil. The piggies are going to be eating the basil leaves not the compost. I can't see how the chives could taint the plant.

Thanks for being the voice of reason! I appear to be having one of those days when I just completely over-think things.

I agree with @piggieminder we have an allotment and dig in any farm yard muck we can find, the veggies are all the more healthier for it. Your used compost will be just fine
