I am in the process of turning our family into as green as possible.. this is a long process as i'm learning all the time but i'm at a point now where guilt really does get to me when i'm not doing as much as I can.. hence waste due to gp's.

I am going througha lot of newspaper that I would otherwise recycle and that is going straight to the landfill site. It's bothering me so much that I have just bought a compost bin from the council.

I should have checked first but can the newspaper, hay, gp poo and wee all go in the compost bin?

Any advice would be lovely.

Stick the paper into the recycle bin I do its only turned into loo rolls or sick basins for hospitals. Its washed first anyway ;) Hay I put it in with garden waste ;)

newspaper can't be composted, i seperate the newspaper from the rest of bedding using two bags when cleaning out, the paper goes in the normal bin as it's soiled i dont think it can be recycled, and the rest- hay and poo goes into the compost bin, woodshavings can go in too but i dont use them. i re use the bags i collect it in too,i use them a few times.

didn't realise you can recycle the newspaper, thought if it was soiled it had to go in normal collection.

We get three bins here green one for rubbish brown with brown lid garden waste then a brown bin with a grey lid for recycle stuff paper, tin, plastic ect it all goes into that bin then sorted out at the recycle centre.

yup same as us,pity we cant put shavings etc in the garden bin :-\

Thanks all, been reading up on it - said guinea pig poo is marvellous because of all the greens they eat! champion.

I wish our council would recycle plastic.. we HAVE to throw away so much plastic. I tut ll the time when i'm shopping. We have absolutely no facilities that recycle plastic here.. very annoying!

I know but it might change hopefully soon. I send hubby to the tip every week council will take it one way or the other ;)

we have our rubbish collected fortnightly, and it's a nightmare, the recycling bins are fine, but the bin holding normal hosehold rubbish gets so full, having a 5 people family it just doesn't work, and i recycle everything i can. my bins last summer were always full of maggots,
i have a tip for you all, if you have a rubbish bin that gets really full and infested with maggotts it will smell soooo bad if you close the lid,, if you leave the lid open or prop it open, the maggots don't like it (don't like the light) they don't surface and the bin wont smell, stops it all getting hot and sweaty.
i learnt this trick when i lived in germany, they've been seperating rubbish for years now, even sell bins with 3 compartments in.
It's great over there, you can leave all your food packaging in the foyer of the supermarkets in a recycle bin. WHY can't we do that? I lived there between 1999-2002, we are way behind.
we are always doing extra trips to the rubbish tip.

Interesting thread well done O0
We put Duke's hay when he has it onto the garden now, used to throw it out (till i suggested using it as compost), our papers i use for Duke then i either dry them out for the garbage recycle section or i put them in my bin at work which all goes to compost too. Then our tins and plastics go to a bin which they then recycle. I think we're doing a fairly good job of recycling now and they advise to do compost etc... all the time. We have 2 compost bins going at a time. We also compost our left over veggies which we then have great 'soil' for our garden.

:) Or... dig a trench and line with newspaper, half fill with compost, sow seeds (runner bean, potato) and cover seeds. This retains the moisture :) Also brilliant for marrows that like LOTS of moisture! Obviously this only uses a small percentage of waste but is a good way to recycle yet again. Eventually the newspaper composts in the ground (hence the need for the deep trenches :)

we get a green wheelie bin for garden rubbish but they will not take pet waste, veg waste, paper etc only cut flowers and garden
rubbish such as weeds shrub trimmings etc. I know it goes for composting and then is resold through council outlets so I presume that pet waste and veg waste are a problem on health grounds and vermin at the composting sites.

our recycling bin for grass cuttings and garden waste, take pet waste (not newspapers) and all our veg peelings too, I have recycle bins in the kitchen, one for veg peelings old fruit etc: and one for plastics, paper, tins etc: I know they didn't used to take veg peelings this is quite a new addition. So I don't see why other councils don't do this too.

Newspaper can be composted :)

Some of the pig beddings goes onto the compost heep and the rest into the bin.

ours won't take the newspaper if it's in the compost bin.although alot of people on here are putting it in their paper recycling, Might try this myself, although not sure suppose to if it is soiled,

Ahh..I understand what you mean. I thought you meant it wouldn't compost. We only have our normal bin, a blue box (for cans, glass) and a blue bag (for paper). We are a very green family so have a big compost heap on the garden, and a big (not commercial) compost bin on our allotments.

Our council have sent us a leaflet and in it it says it won't recycle newspapers which have been used for pets.

I so admire you going as green as poss. I try but it is hard work!

You shouldn't recycle it if it's been soiled. They shouldn't take it but if they do and it gets put in with a big load, it can contaminate the whole lot and it would all end up in landfill.

I compost some newspaper but if you get through loads, the bulk of it won't rot down so you should only put small amounts in the compost bin.
