Hi Guys,

Little Wilma's results came back and her kidneys are showing up as compromised. The vet advised they between 3/4 in a scale of 5.

She's also always suffered from Crystals and stone's over the years. I tend to avoid High calcium foods but now she isn't eating everything she is given she is very selective and losing weight.

She doesn't get any nuggets but now I'm giving her critical care so she and Fred can eat it thoughout the day.

What I'm looking to know is, is there a way via diet to slow down kidney failure or at this stage should I just feed what she wants?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear about wilmas results. A low protein/ potassium diet is usually recommended for comprimised kidneys, although eating in general is obviously of upmost importance. Fudge has comprimised kidneys, but as we are only going via urine protein tests, we have no idea by how much. She is on a low protein diet, and eats IC veggies as that is what i buy anyway. If fudge ever started to go off her food, i wouldnt start switching and syringe feeding due to her other health problems and her having fought so well for so long- i would let her go at that point, but as i say thats because of all her other isses shes fighting.

With wilma, shes obviously feeling the effects of something to not want to eat much. Have they ruled out any other issues?

If its her kidneys making her feel poorly, its all just about management. Personally i think specific diets at this stage wont do much for Wilma due to her already displaying signs that this is affecting her.

To make her more comfortable and hopefully get her back on her feet for a while, try increasing fluid intake for her, helping flush out the toxins that build up in the bloodstream when the kidneys are comprimised. This can make them feel "hungover", so keeping things flushing through can help them feel a bit better.

She may be needing pain relief at this stage- metacam. Although this is not good for the kidneys, its a matter of weighing up the pro's to having her comfortable to the con's of the drug- quality is more important than quantity. There are other pain relief options available that i know you've used with your other poorly boy in the past.

If these things can perk her up, she may want to start eating again on her own, giving her more of a normal life.

It is one of these catch 22 situations- i know how hard it is. The sheer volume of diuretics fudge gets is so damaging to her kidneys- but id rather have her for a shorter time being happy and enjoying life, than longer and uncomfortable. In saying that, shes suprised us all and wilma may just do the same.

Thinking of you x

Hi - Sorry about Wilma. just wanted to say that I agree with what @Adelle said above. When one of mine was in kidney failure the vet described that he would be feeling sick and hungover just as above. Food wise anything that tempted him was the focus but avoiding calcium / protein - anything difficult for the kidneys to process. I opted to continue with a lot of painkiller with the warning that it would probably accelerate decline - maybe. Come on little Wilma.

Sorry to hear about Wilma :(

I can only agree with what the others have said, had very similar experiences with Tango.
We went down the tramadol route to try and alleviate any extra stress on the kidneys as my vet believed metacam would do them more harm than good. His gut started slowing down a bit because he wasn't eating as much so we tried a bit of fibreplex to help keep things moving and he actually really really loved that and was one of the things he had the most enthusiasm for so might be worth looking into that if you're not already.

Thanks for the information, Wilma seems to be preferring leaves etc probably the water content as she's not a drinker but I know we have the calcium issue also to consider.

We're treating for a Urine infection at the moment, and she's on semintra for her kidneys. She's had full blood's, Xray's, Urine analysis and teeth inspection nothing else has shown.

She's not painkillers as we want to see the results of semintra. She's not being syringe fed and is maintaining her very low weight of 600 grams. She likes critical care so I just put a little plate in although it's a catch 22 considering the protein levels. My little girly is a good age now approaching her 8th/9th year.

Your doing all the right things hun. Theres a bag of leaves from aldi, green bag mixed salad leaves. It contains escarole, batavia, endive.. Basically lettuce, no iceberg. Low calcium content. Thats what i feed my girls. Tear it up an put it on the edge of a plate, pour water on it and she'll be taking up water as she grabs food. Avoid dioralyte due to the potassium levels, fudge is off that now her kidneys where struggling a bit x

Sending love to Wilma mate, you are a fantastic Mum. Hugs Jo x x

I'm very sad to update this news, Wilma was helped to the bridge earlier on today.
Sleep well little princess, pain free at last x

She was bless her she was coming up to her 7th Gotcha day. When I adopted Wilma, she and her Sister Pebbles were both adults so definitely a good age.

I'll miss my dainty princess, it's hard making that decision but I knew it was coming. She was an unhappy little girly yesterday and I'm just glad the end wasn't dragged out.

Fred's now my main concern, as he is showing his age now and I don't know if Wilma's death will push him over the edge.

X
