HI,

Tofu has started making a wheesy noise after wheeking on occasions (like a bike tyre/football being pumped). It's kind of like at the end of a wheek and it sounds like a ball being pumped
It was very occassionally (I think the first one was two weeks ago) but he did three in a row this AM. We are making a VET appointment asap but do you have any ideas?

Thanks all!

I think you are doing right getting a vet appointment to get him checked out.

We are keeping everything crossed for you here 🤞 let us know how he gets on!

Hi!

Guinea pig airways are very small and narrow, so the least obstruction can sound quite dramatic and cause a wide range of noises; the description of which can vary widely. We cannot comment without more direct access to your piggy.

However, it is always good to have any persisting or recurring sounds vet checked, even more so when they come from the lung area instead of the nasal passages (just holding your ear against the different areas can sometimes give you a bit of a hint where the respiratory noise is coming from).

All the best!

Thanks so much all. The Vet proscribed antibiotics (They listened with a stethascope and heard a crackling noise in his lungs) - which we are struggling to feed Tofu. He hates it. He squirms like mad if we are holding him. He did eat it on coriander but only if we have enough leaves to wrap around it and mask the smell.

Any tips for feeding a reluctant piggie antibiotics?
Also, would it be legitimate to give them coriander every day for the next week to fascilitate this?

We did some research on here and found some great videos and instructions. Tofu took his meds this morning with little fuss - though much upset and we have a method for the rest of the week!

Thanks everyone - including the people who didn't know they were helping me on the other threads!

Hi everyone,

We posted before about Tofu making a wheezing sound after wheeking.

We took him to the vet and he had 7 days of baytril (0.4ml per dose, two doses a day).

After this, the vet could still hear some mild crackling and prescribed 3 more days (same frequency and dosage).

In this three days we heard both Gnocchi and Tofu making the breathing noises and the vet prescribed 5 days of baytrill (0.5ml per dose, two doses a day) + 3 days of loxicom (0.4ml per dose, one dose per day).

We are on day 4 of five but have noticed that Tofu is sneezing. He's been a bit impacted and we've been wiping his bum of poo. We are really worried about them and I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this or advice. They are going back to the vets on monday but it really seems their treatment plan isn't working but I don't know what to say to them / don't have enough knowledge to ask for what we need.

Also we pulled this (pic attached) from Tofu's penis this morning when wiping for poo. Is that a sign of too much calcium (the cotton bud is for scale)?

Thanks all,

NP

Hi

Please use the Find Thread/Your Threads button for updates and further questions on an ongoing case of yours so you can help us and save us time. It allows us to refer back and refresh our memory.
We are all doing this for free in our free time on top of a job, our own piggies and private life; we also jump between lots of threads in whenever we come on.
I have merged your threads on the same subject.

All the best that the baytril will help. Sneezing is generally an environmental issue as a reaction to an irritant from hay or house dust to other things, like perfumed air fresheners, smoke, scent sticks etc. Dry air from air conditioning or radiators can also impact.
Irritants to Avoid Around Guinea Pigs

The thing in the picture looks like a small sperm rod to me - that is dried semen fluid.

Hiya,

So... An update - Thanks for this. We don't use any of the irritants at all / not around the piggies. We do have a radiator nearby but it's been off for a while due to the weather. Both boys have finished their course + extended course of antibiotics. They are fine and happy and content in themselves but Tofu is still making the wheezing noise... The vet listened to both of their lungs once a week ago and once today. They heard nothing of concern.

They seem fine and have no other symptoms - is this something we should keep being worried about basically? What else could it be? The VET didn't have any ideas and couldn't see anything wrong with either of them. We were going to take them to Anna but she's off sick :( I now don't know whether to be concerned or just chill out. It only happens when Tofu is super excited and wheeking for food etc.
