Hi. I am new to this forum and a first time guinea pig owner. I have had my babies for about 2 weeks now and they have settled into their new life and new family with ease. I am concerned though that they wont eat hay or pellets ( they tend to love peeing on the pellets though ) which i have read should make up the majority of their diet. At the moment they are loving this dried grass looking mix that they were fed on at the pet shop i got them from (we dont have a rescue centre around here so please dont hate me) and will happily gorge themselves all day on it along with their various veg and fruit. Should i be worried they arnt getting enough of the nutrition they need? I was told they are only 6-10 weeks old and weigh 427gms and 452gms.

What hay are they having? It should be Timothy hay, which is the main part of their diet

It is Timothy hay but it is with rye, its the only hay ive seen so far mentioning Timothy hay anything the rest have been generic no name hay from the pet food places that are lucerne and oaten. The town I'm from isnt a large town so their hasnt been alot to choose from.

Lucerne is alfalfa hay which is not good for them to have too much of it. As for peeing in/on their pellets, try moving the bowl so that its not the same level as the floor.

@Kylie80 hi I'm in Victoria and I used a produce store that sold hay in bales and bags. It was Meadow hay. But I also bought Timothy hay from my vets.
Whereabouts are you? :wel:

Hi. I'm in Queensland. We have a couple of Petbarns in a near by town that only sell the oaten hay and the lucerne hay though, I have no idea if you have Petbarns in Vic. Thanks for the idea about checking with vets, i'll look into that.

Hi darn it must've just missed you!
Yes we do have petbarn here.
Try the big produce stores that supply in bulk. Often people buy for their horses chooks etc
If you get stuck let me know I have family and friends in QLD who maybe able to help me help you

I wouldn't worry too much - it might take them a while to get used to new things. When I first got my two, they were very fussy with veggies but I persisted and would put some of what they did like in with what they wouldn't eat. Now they eat anything! They could still be adjusting to their new surroundings too. I recently tried them on Alfalfa King Timothy Hay (confusing name, I know lol) and they prefer it to the stuff they had before. If they sell that where you live then I would highly recommend it :) mine can't get enough of it!

I found some Oxbow Western Timothy Hay at a pet food supply store. I dont know if its suitable for young GP but it sure looks alot nicer and ive heard alot about the oxbow products being good on the forum. Ive been putting their veggies on a small amount of the hay to start with and they have been eating some of it along with the original hay. Fingers crossed they start to eat some more. Now i just have to get them to be not so picky about fruit lol. Thankyou so much for everyones help you've all really helped my sanity.
