concerned about waiting

I woke this morning to find blood in my pigs urine so i rushed her straight to the vet, we live in rural australia and i can not go to see a specilist in exotic pets, he suggested it was a urinery infection and gave us antibiotics and said if it did not improve come back on monday to check for bladder stones,

she still has blood in her urine ( its only been a few hours since i saw the vet) but she is behaving like her normal self, how long can i expect to still see the blood after starting the antibiotics and if it is bladder stones will waiting until monday be harmful?

it is going to be a long weekend waiting for monday but if anyone can help put my mind at ease i would appreciate it.
 
I have never experienced blood in urine when our piggies have had UTI's, so can't tell you how long it takes to clear up. Our piggie's squeaking died down after 2-3 days when on antibiotics for a UTI. Hopefully someone will be along soon who has expr=erience of blood in urine. I hope your piggie recovers soon. What antibiotic are they on?

Rodders had a bladder stone, but he showed no bleeding until the night before his op! The only signs he showed were wheeking when he peed and raising his back end up sometimes when he pooed.

When I first took him to the vet they treated him for a UTI, giving him Baytril and Metacam for 1 week.

For a few weeks he stopped the wheeking and raising of his bum, but then started again so I took him back and again they were going to give me more meds, but I insisted they did an x-ray. That showed up a bladder stone.

I believe it is typical to treat for a UTI first as they are quite common in GP's due to their anatomoy (being low to the ground).

X-rays and or ultra sounds really are the best way to go with piggies showing blood in their urine. I would never wait again if I ever had another piggy showing those signs.

hiyah, I'm sorry about your piggy.

I had a boy and i found some random blood in his cage and took him to the vets and we started treatment for uti, but after two lots of anit b's there was no change, he sqeaked from day one and was in discomfort whilst peeing.

We then went down the route of bladder stones and he had the op but sadly i lost him about a week or two after his stone was removed.

i never saw any blood again after the initial spotting.

Really hope you have a positive outcome x
 
Thanks for all the quick replys i will just add the vet did an ultra sound to check for bladder stones and did not find any but he said an x ray would give a clearer picture if there was still a problem, if i have to see the vet before monday i will ba looking at a weekend bill of 500-800 dollars so it would have to be a severe emergancy
 
My boy Biscuit had blood in his urine once. He was immediately given an AB and an Xray. It turned out to be a UTI and no stones but you should think about getting an Xray to be safe.

UTIs and bleeding can be very stressful but, if you can get everything checked, there is no reason to be unduly upset. A good AB should deal with the infection and hopefully stop the bleeding and bring down any inflammation. You will still need to get an xray of the bladder to check for stones or crystals. Stone and/or crystals forming are a common cause of UTI so when the bleeding clears up, this might not be the end.

The bleeding should clear up in a day or two but can sometimes a little longer depending on how badly the bladder has been damaged.
 
Hi,

my piggie Biscuit has had blood in his urine on and off for a year now, he has been on baytril and the first time it cleared it up then it started again and again they perscribed baytril and it didn't clear it.

I had an x ray done and they didn't find any stones just sludge and grit so he was put on metacam and seems to be fine he has always ate well and doesn't seem affected

best to get an xray and rule stones out:)
 
If the Vet is good enough and able to read an Ultrasound then stones CAN be ruled out, you don't need an Xray as well.

My Patrick has periods of bleeding - generally he bleeds for 3 days well on ABS and then it clears up.
 
Just as an update my paranoia is really taking over, my pig is still peeing blood and squeeking when she pees, now i have noticed she has not pooed in a few hours, could this be because she had her morning food and has not eaten much since, she seems to have her normal appatite and is acting like herself, any ideas?
 
Hi there

If the volume of food she is consuming has diminished because of the discomfort of the bladder then there will be an effect of the size and number of poo's. Top up her hay frequently - a new handful is always more delicious than the one she had an hour ago. Hopefully she'll tuck in and bulk up her gut transit again to get things moving. I would imagine this is just a small 'pooless' time, quite normal and if you weren't in a heightened state because of the illness you would not have noticed.

If she fails to produce any poo for several hours then there could be a problem (do keep an eye open for her eating her poo directly from her bottom though as she may be ingesting more than normal to help keep her gut flora balanced).

A quick call to the vet should she not poo by this afternoon - metaclopromide to get things moving, fibreplex to give the gut some fibre, probiotics to help balance the gut. There are a few things to help - but getting some food in is the main one.

One of mine had a UTI a while ago. He also had blood in his pee. Did your vet do a strip test on his pee? That usually shows up the water infection. Within 3 days of him being on baytril there was no blood!

OK there is a few of us here from OZ......... you say rural..... but you seem to have a pretty good vet from what you'd said....
If your vet is happy to chat to other more cavy savvy vets that's great :) my vet is here in victoria he's well recognised and if your vet would like to chat please pass on his details (he does chat to other vets thru OZ)...i will put them at the bottom of my post :)
I'm wish your piggie all the best a UTI must be looked after pronto........ medications as well as probiotics....something a lot of aussie vets are not always aware of.......

I just want to say thank you everyone for all the great responses my little pig still does not seem much better still wheeking and peeing blood, shes still running around and squeeking and eating so we, me and the vet are giving the antibiotics until thursday to work before searching for more answers,

Definitely consider an x-ray or ultra sound for stones asap - sorry to be a bit premature but we wasted 3 precious weeks of two lots of antibiotics which didn't help - hand feeding, pain relief etc. and still had a very poorly piggy. We nursed him 24/7 and thought he was losing the fight and will to live 8...
X-rays without GA showed a huge stone and surgery performed - he was running around eating and chasing his brother as normal all within 72 hours of finding it. 7 weeks down the line, he's still a picture of health but has made me a paranoid slave :... :(|)
Sows can pass stones I believe but I would want to get to the root of this asap. Is she having Metacam at all (sorry may have overlooked this) and Septrin ?
 
The vet has put her on baytril, we wnet to the vets yesterday and dropped of the pig for a days observation i told the assistant again and again make sure she gets an x ray when i picked her up no xray had been done my vet takes the wait and see route and the only other two vets i have seen before have not understood why we care so much about guinea pigs so i am sticking with mr wait and see because at least he cares about her, my partner has suggested taking her to the nearest city townsville to see if we can find a better vet but this is an 8 hour drive away! fingers crossed on thursday we will get our answers
 
hmmmm......the wait and see route isnt great if your piggie has a bladder stone though :x

I lost my piggie through bladder stones, and if I had to go through that again I would be insisting on an x-ray right at the start of the consultation. I wasted 2 months treating a UTI with anti biotics pow-pow If he had of had the op to remove it 2 months previously, he might still be here.

I hope you have a positive outcome with your piggie x

Uhm, I would not be happy with this outcome at all - you are paying for your piggy to have the treatment she needs, not to be fobbed off, no excuses here on your vets behalf. Sorry but I would be very angry - time is paramount with anything like this as as first-time-piggy-mummy has said, the 'wait and see' attitude is out of the question :o Both of us have had awful experiences with bladder piggies and have advised time wasting is not an option - sorry, you need to get your baby the treatment she needs and deserves now. No time for regrets. Sometimes the nicey-nice approach is not the best with vets - I would be stomping and demanding grrrr if she were my piggy.
Try her with some diluted cranberry juice, this may help but she really does need a savvy vet.

erm have you done a search for cavy savvy vets up in QLD ?

OK she still needs some probiotics.........for her tummy as baytril can upset them, she may end up with quite soft poops.....

Just a thought the ACS (Australian Cavy Sanctuary is in QLD it's in Brisbane) if you message them they're fantastic in helping where ever they can :)
 
I have looked for a cavy savy vet up north but all i can find is Brisbane short of putting her on a plane we can not get her there, so tomorrow i will go to my vet and stay there until she gets her x ray even if they have to close around me, i even now have the contact for a vet in victoria passed on to me throught his forum my vet could contact with any questions, so we will see how i go
 
caramel my pig finally got an answer, she had a bladder cyst and pyometra :(, she went in for surgery today and has woken up but is not very well so she will be with the vet overnight fingers crossed she will be strong enough to pull through
