Never never land
Toby has been quite the puzzle since February last year he developed a mucus discharge from one nostril after multible antibiotics we were never able to get to the bottom of it.

He then went on to develop teeth problems and has had 2 Dentals so far. Last week I took him for a check up as he was definitely struggling to eat despite no weight loss. We agreed to schedule him in for yesterday.

Fast forward to Xmas day and he began to fill with fluid, we went to the vets yesterday where he was given a full MOT. X-rays/bloods/urine analysis and a dental. He's back home and eating but I'm so worried about what's causing this.

Fingers crossed for blood results today.

I took a picture of my little man to share his on-going saga - notice his belly hanging down this is due to fluid retention. Since his health issues he's weigh 735grams and is currently just over 780grams.

Do you mean you’re waiting for blood results before commencing the diuretic? What dose have you been prescribed? We’ve got a piggy who is just a year old become very waterlogged. She’s now on 0.25ml of frusol twice daily and very much improved. Her heart sounds good. We also had an older piggy who same thing happened to, but sadly once the fluid reduced you could feel numerous lymph nodes, very enlarged. We lost her to lymphoma within a fortnight x

Bloating issues are not contagious.

He's on diurectics and we have also started heart medicine today, as on examination a heart murmur was detected.

How long did you find it took for your piggy to lose its fluid?

Toby is eating with gusto, like a different pig from this morning. Just had his first dose of heart medicine to.

Good news is all his results came back clear.

I'm hoping this is the case, we're given diurectics 3 times daily 0.16ml's.

Just need to keep an eye, very hard to monitor weight loss though as you just don't know what's decreasing.

Definitely feeling much better about him this evening, feel like someone has swapped my pig.

How long has your girl pig been on Frusol for, I take it it's going to be for her life?

Hope Toby is on the mend and his swelling goes down. What a worrying time for you.

My Ellie was on Furosimide? sp, for her fluid retention & i cant remember if it was Nelio or Fortekor for her heart murmur, she only seemed to need the diuretic after humid days & would seem to rattle & cough with the fluid. otherwise she didn't have the Furosimide generally unless needed.
if i remember rightly, celery & dandelions are natural diuretics... it might be worth giving him a little more of those if you can find any, although you'll probably need to check he doesn't dehydrate if on medication for it too. check with the vet first.

healing vibes little man. love the girls & i xx

That's good news maybe once the fluid is under control and heart medicine is working we can stop Frusol just have to wait and see.

Thanks everyone for the advice this is something I haven't ever came up against before, and of course the healing vibes!

Truckloads of healing vibes being sent for your handsome little man :wub:... he is rather gorgeous
i think Ellie was on 0.25mg of the Fortekor or Nelio whichever it was (ACE inhibitor) twice a day,
once the heart pumps the blood round properly then the fluid retention should reduce at the same time... so reducing the need for the diuretic when the heart meds are working efficiently at the optimum dose,
(you'll probably find it will need tweaking for a while to get the best results, a gradual increase in dose seems to be the favoured treatment).
xx

Toby is still quite active this morning we have just had vegetables and first dose of diurectics, I'm going to give him the heart medicine soon, as I'd rather he got it in the morning than night as it's an easier routine.

He's currently running about exploring and squeaking to himself although he's always a lot happier when I have him out nosying. It's frustrating trying to work out if he's eating enough given his predicament.

We are expecting Maddie to need a low dose of diuretic for life. Simon is hoping we can reduce it though once she’s stable. She’s been on it for just less than a month. Her weight was around 1.05 k before she started to retain fluid. Within days she had gone up to 1.2 k.

Super concerned about Toby, his back legs are weak and sliding away at times although he's still able to stay standing when he's in his cage he's not really moving at all. I took him out and he was a hunched up little pig but after another dose of diurectics and some lettuce he started eating hay he's not did this all day. I really don't have the experience to know what's happening.

He eats alot of vegetables pepper's everyday so it should be good but his bloods showed that he's anaemic.

How does he seem now?

He's still keen on vegetables which I find bizarre for a sick piggy but if I'm honest I don't see a good out come but I don't have the experience so I really don't know. Even with his fluid retention he's losing weight and topping him is a task as he gets so stressed and his breathing increases so I worry more about Aspirating.

This morning Toby wasn't hiding he was sitting in hay, and came over to greet me looking for his vegetables he also had a drink from his water bottle. I'm guessing he's feeling a bit better I have given him his first diurectic dose of the day.

Currently he's having some hay, he's just finished his vegetables I don't want to force feed him if it's avoidable due to the stress. Although equally I don't want gut stasis, good news he is passing pellets and I haven't given him Cisapride this morning. I've been offering everything I have in an attempt to increase his eating.

I don't have anyway to monitor his weight as he's filled with so much fluid, his weight was down and some of this must be weight loss Thankfully we have gut stimulants (cisapride) if needed.

I've decided to start force feeding him as well figure the nutrients will help as I have put some pro-biotics in the recovery plus - hopefully top up vitamin C. After reading many people's experiences it makes sense if they are weak from lack food they are going to be less inclined to eat more.

Granted Toby likes some syringe food and then grass seeds 😉.

Don't want to speak to soon but definitely more alert.

Oh my goodness @furryfriends (TEAS) , I'm unsure if this is good I think it is but all the fluid is gone. He's still not right but I'm feeling better about him I was doing a lot of reading with horrendous outcomes but non of the pig's deflated. We're at the vets tomorrow will see what Glen says.

That’s amazing news! How does he seem in himself? Is he still eating? Moving around any better? x x
