I'm hoping you can help please as I'm getting conflicting advice from other groups and rescue centres.
We're looking for a new companion for our bereaved guinea pig, Woody. His cage mate died a few days ago and Woody is starting to look a little sad, although he's getting lots of love and attention from the family.
Woody is a 7 month old, un-neutered boar. We think a baby boar would be a good match for him. The question is how soon do we get one? Some people (including a number of experienced, 30 years + guinea pig owners) say to get one straight away and just put them in together immediately, as the baby won't be a threat to Woody's dominance and he'll be pleased to have a friend. Others say we need to take our time finding the right piggy and spend time on introductions and bonding.
To complicate matters, we're going on holiday towards the end of August, so my dilemma is do we get a new friend before or after we go away? Our plan had been to board Woody at a friend's house, although one local rescue centre has suggested we board Woody there and they can combine it with introductions. I'm feeling thorough confused. Help - what would you do?
