My guinea-pig Codi is seriously not well at the moment, she's been losing weight for months while still eating and drinking fine! Two weeks ago I noticed she had lumps right down either side of her belly. Of course I took her straight to the vet who was just as confused as me. She had never seen this is a piggy before and was unsure of how to treat it. She is also losing her hair, it's mostly all gone now! My vet went away and did some researched and thought it could be like a false pregnancy where she is building up milk but it's going nowhere so is coming out in lumps, if you understand. So we've started treating her with galsop which is for the same thing in dogs.

Codi is still lively and active, in fact is she wasn't so skinny and bald you wouldn't really know anything was wrong. She's still eating and drinking, and peeeing and pooing fine. It's totally confused me and my vet as to what's wrong with her. And we really don't know if she will get any better! I just wondered if anyone has had a piggy with this condition or similar? Or does anyone know about it at all?

Thank you

To me it sounds like ovarian cysts....... They can scan her while awake to see if it is. lose of hair is a sign its ovarian cysts. Both my pigs have had them

Thanks I'll suggest this to my vet and see where it goes. I know that she is researching this aswell and is trying to get to the bottom of the problem.

Hows it going with your piggy? Has your vet scanned her? Its very simple and is done awake

If it is Ovarian cysts there is no need for your pig to have an op, she can have a course of injections and if they're really pig a good vet will be able to drain them. For more details on doses etc phone The Cambridge Cavy Trust. Please don't let your vet do a spey its not necessary!

Both mine HAD to have hysterectomies due to 1 of them being the size of a tangerine and the other piggy had so many. My 1st one recovered within 5 days but the other one was at the vets for 3 weeks. totally nightmare.
