Hi Everyone

Came across a lovely little pig at Wood Green, unfortunately they do not do home checks as far out as me but they asked me to send pictures of my set up. Which I did. He's a neutered boy so would live with 3 of my sows.

They have told me that for 4 pigs the hutch should be 5' x 2' x 2' and the outdoor run 6' x 4'. They suggested I take photos of myself next to the run so they could judge the size.... :o Interesting trying to take the photos on self-timer last night in the dark! After all that I got a voicemail today saying that part of the rehoming criteria is that the pigs go out on the grass on a daily basis. Now, my pigs do not go out on the grass in the winter if it's wet - esp. the longhaired ones! So I guess that means they won't let me have him. I will ring them back tomorrow but just wanted to know what anyone else thinks - I don't think they should be put out at this time of year!

Also cage sizes seem a bit odd - I thought most people on here say 4' x 2' for 2 pigs? So what should it be for 4?
Confused!

Hi Sophie,

6x2 is fine for 4. I am worried about the rescues that say they must go on grass, sometimes it isn't possible. I know with my own grass I don't know what is on it in terms of weeds so I wouldn't chance it.

No pigs should not be out this time of year.

Thanks Louise - I've taken some more photos and emailed them over, hopefully they will think I'm ok! Mine get hay twice a day and GrazeOn so I don't think they're exactly lacking in anything... but it's hard to tell them that!

The pig is a 4 year old longhaired boy with old scarring in one eye - so I figured I had space for him to live out his days with 3 of my girls!

it certainly sounds confusing and having you standing next to your'set up' to judge size etc is certainly odd!
But i suppose each rescue has their own rules but having to go on grass every day sounds odd! I have a huge lawn just for my Horde but in wet weather its not possible and also i have to let the grass recover! even in summer it can take at least a week!
Good Luck anyways x

Yes well they offered to hold Larry until 12 noon yesterday so I could take pics - but I had to be up at 6 am for a course, so had to do it in the dark on Friday night. I can only hope the neighbours weren't watching, they think I'm a mad guinea pig woman already! As Vikki pointed out, I could be a dwarf or a giant for all they know!

Have sent a new lots of pics (might post them on here later for entertainment value - 'Would YOU home a guinea pig to a woman like this?' ;D)

Will ring them in a bit and see what they say!

Hi Sophie I agree, I don't put my piggies out on the grass at this time of year and particularly not if it's wet. If it's a mild day and I am doing a major clean out I might put the big run, tunnels, some hand cut grass etc. on the patio so the gang can have a run and I can scrub out their quarters properly, otherwise they have run time in our large shed at this time of the year.

Good luck with the little boar - Wood Green would be mad to not let the little guy "enjoy" his remaining years with your girlies O0

Re: Confused by Wood Green - but Accepted!

Good news, just been on the phone to them and they've said it's fine for me to have Larry pig - so I'm off to collect him at 2pm!

Really pleased, now just got to go out in the wind and rain and get all my existing pigs clean and fed.

Looking forward to Larry arriving! Bless him

Well he's here and he's settling in well - a really friendly chap, bless him. Have taken some pics and will post them tomorrow when I've got a better internet connection!

He's kind of agouti and looks like a sheltie-cross. I've called him Harry

Great news Sophie. Look forward to the pics :smitten:

Hopefully they didn't mean they have to be out on grass in the winter. You certainly wouldn't get one of our piggies if you were planning on doing that!

Congratulations and well doen for persevering when they seemed a little odd at the rescue! O0

Good Luck to Harry O0

I only put my GP`s out if the predicted temperature is over 8 degrees centrigrade - with no wind chill. My piggies are under cover so the grass is dry.

If they feel cold or tired they have a fresh well stuffed hay box to wonder into to warm up.

Their routine starts with a `chase me` game, a quick feed, then a group cuddle and nap in the hay box then they start all over again.

Having somewhere warm and out of the wind and droughts is more important than temperature in my opinion. I agree with the above comments and because wet grass and hay is definately not good for GP`s.

I`ve been to the Woodgreen shelter and they are 100% OK in my opinion. They know their business about GP care. Their GP`s are not put out out in very wet conditions. Also, the GP`s have a warm shelter to run into - usually with a bonded mate to cuddle up too. I wish other shelters were as good as they are when checking potential foster homes.
