Okay i know that guinea pigs need hay but can i feed grass instead of hay now that it's coming back but even if I can I won't be cutting out hay until the middle of April. Sorry to pull you into this but @rome_italy I got this idea from you.
Thanks

For me personally I wouldn't cut out hay because mine love to burrow into a pile and it doesn't matter how big my garden is I would never have enough grass to keep them going (it certainly wouldn't get long enough for burrowing tunnels)

:agr: Even when mine are on grass all day in the summer (I wean them onto it slowly) they still have access to hay 24/7. Unless you have a meadow instead of a back garden, I can't see how you would possibly have enough grass to keep them all going and healthy!:lol!:

sorry @Misty if I don't read the posts on time...
actually my piggies have always the hay available... they eat a good amount of it and waste a lot, too. They eat a lot of grass too, and the grass replaces all the vegs as I give them only a little slice of bell pepper for the night (plus a huge amount of fresh grass and hay). I sometimes sit down looking at them eating; I see that they eat grass and then they go to the hay and then they come back to grass...
One of my piggie, the last one adopted (he is 2 years old) had never eaten grass before and he found a huge pile of grass here at home. The vet found his premolars a bit enlongated and prescribed the grass (especially the most fibrous one) also as a therapy for his teeth. He should eat only hay and grass for not feeling full and for chewing all day long. This "therapy" is expected to work for eroding his premolars.
I see that there is a hay on sale which is loved by my piggies: it is Bunny Heu or a name like that... it comes from Germany and it is quite expensive. But I am not worried of the hay, my sows have the teeth well eroded just eating more grass than hay...
I think the hay is necessary... If you have no hay at home, buy a simple one online. A good grass can substitute all the vegs, it has also vit C (if it is just picked up), but I would not delete hay...

Mine eat loads of hay as well as grass. Even in the summer when they are out on the grass all day they have a small hutch filled with hay to burrow in and eat.
