Babe was closing her right eye last night, when I looked there was a stray hair which I removed. The whites of her eye was red and angry looking. I didn't have any optrex so I flushed it with my contact lens solution.

This morning it looks a little better but is still red, she'd not closing her eye as much though. Just wondering if it will need additional treatment or if I should just keep flushing it?

What would the vet prescribe? I have some fucithalmic eye cream (for rabbits) - would this be suitable?

(wanted to add - I have no problem with taking her to the vet, I've just got a massive vet bill at the moment so would prefer to treat her at home if possible)

I think that if you can continue to wash her eye with optrex, you should be OK.

A vet could check whether there was an ulcer on the cornea, but as you say you removed a hair, that is not so likely.

My guinea pig furby got a splinter of hay in her eye and got treated with the fucithalmic acid. I also could see a ulcer on her eye without the use of dyes and special lights, but it was bigger once you used the tests.

Use chloramphenicol eye drops from the chemist, 2 drops 3 times daily for 5 days,
Tell the pharmacist it is for your own use, not for a gp!

The Fucithalmic or the Optrex Infected Eyes could both be of use. The latter contains an antibiotic, so may treat an infection 'quicker' than the Fucithalmic, but most vets will prescribe Fucithalmic eye drops for a variety of eye complaints.

Thanks everyone.

I took her to the vet last night (my vet has takenm to only charging me for prescriptions with an uninsured animal so no consultation fee which is a big help!). He had a look at her eye and said there is an ulcer but is hopeful it will clear up fairly quickly. He prescribed fucithalmic eye drops.
