Connie has just had a wee and bled at the same time. She is also squeaking :( I have phoned my vet but she is operating at the minute so the receptionist said that she'd get her to phone me back when she can. I have collected a urine sample and that is in the fridge. She finished her course of Septrin this morning. I am so worried and don't no whats wrong with her :( She is still eating, drinking and acting normally

oh claire:( i dont know whats wrong now, but i am here with sonny, maggie-may, pheobe, bethany and ruby and we're all wishing you all well, and that includes eliza and you. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

My vet rang me back and told me to take a urine sample in. She has also prescribed Connie another course of Septrin 0.25ml twice daily along with Metacam once a day :o I am waiting for a phone call back with Connie's results :...

Awwwww thinking of you both :) I hope the pain relief helps her feel a bit better - gosh she dosen't seem to respond well to the antibiotics does she :( I don't really know what to say or suggest for her poor thing :( I wish I could wave a magic wand and make her better for you :)

Thank you :) To be honest, she was on the Seprin for just under 2 weeks and I've heard it can take longer for it to work if it's a bad infection :( Do you have any idea how long I should give her the Metacam for? should it be for as long as the septrin?

I don't know :( I can only presume if it is to help with the pain - for as long as you think she needs it :) I don't know what side effects it has? or if it will interfere with the antibiotics - ask the vet when she phones back :) Sorry I'm not the best at giving information for poorly piggies :( All that I know I have learnt from everyone on here, there are so many knowledgeable people on here - I hope someone can help you with this one :) Just thinking of you both xoxo

Omgness this is so weird haha, i just clicked on the Health and Illness thread to post a new thread on my piggie doing the same thing but then i looked down and saw your thread! last night we had Sugar out running around in the kitchen when she weed and some blood was mixed in with it, we don't know whats wrong...but this has happened one time before with her last year and we googled "blood in guinea pigs urine" and it told me all about it...

Blood in a pigs urine is usually associated with Estrus and is NOT a serious condition unless she is unable to urinate or stops eating. We do not usually give pigs antibiotics because they can cause problems themselves.

You will need to increase her vitamin C because a pig under stress requires 2 - 3 times the normal C ration. In addition, put a little bit of unsweetened cranberry juice in her water daily to lower the acidity of her urine. You also want to encourage as much drinking as possible. This will help to restore the balance in her urinary system.

Give her some cut up cucumber as this is a diuretic. However, discontinue all sugary fruits until this problem resolves.

We did all of this and jer little problem went away in no time =) Cranberry juice and non-sugary fruits will do the trick:) We even called the vet and asked if what we were doing would work and they said it should work, so we tried it and WA-LA!
And now it's happening again with my piggie and just started yesterday, so i've gotta do this method again with her to make her awww better:))

Try this with you're little pig and see how things go:)p

I have just had a phone call from the vet and Connie has blood in her urine :0 but no crystals or protein. I need to take a urine sample back in next week to be retested, If there is still no improvement, she will need to be re X rayed :( If she did have a stone, would she have crystals?
OH is going to go mad :(

Awwww Bless you try not too worry :( My vet told me that you tend to see crystals in piggies urine :{ I don't know whether that is true or not or whether she was talking out of her ****
It is such a worry and if you are like me it's very frustrating when you just so want your piggy to get better and sometimes I feel that the vets aren't experienced enough to pinpoint exactly what the problem is from word go.
It's extremely stressfull and on top of that it costs a small fortune, which I know is something we all need to prepare ourselves for when our little ones get poorly but the charges add up and I feel for you. I wish they would hurry up and get her better, I really do :)
My OH paid Peggy's bill last night and it was nearly £80 for a blood test and an x-ray :(

Not sure where that information came from but it's wrong. Guinea pigs do NOT normally bleed when in season - I've had female pigs for many, many years now (verging on a couple of decades) and I've never had one bleed when in season. Blood in urine should ALWAYS be investigated further. Giving huge amounts of fruit and watery veg can also lead to upset stomachs - fruit should always be introduced with caution and should be a treat rather than a staple. I'd also worry that the acidity of some fruits would make urinary problems worse. The reason cranberry juice (proper stuff, not the juice drinks you buy in supermarkets) is thought to help is because it has antibacterial properties.

No crystals is a good sign, much less likely to be a bladder stone though it still doesn't rule it out. Sometimes stubborn UTIs can take a long time to clear with Septrin but it sounds like you're doing all the right things.

Sorry to hear this Claire. I am at a loss what could be the problem. Perhaps a stone or a stubborn infection.

As DSL said guineas don't bleed when they are in season they can get rumbly and act boar like (I had my 2 year old sow mounting my poor 6 month old sow the other day) but that is it. Never noticed any of my girls bleed when in season.

I do hope you get Connie sorted, have you thought about changing vets? Or getting a second opinion? :)

There are 2 vets at my practice and they have both dealt with Connie and both told me the same thing. My vet is also working alongside an exotic vet specialist from the other side of Manchester who she has regular contact with via e-mail and phone over Connie's condition :)

Really sorry to hear about Connie, this little piggy seems to have neverending problems. Hope it all works out well for her. x

Sorry to hear that Connie is still unwell, I think as others have said though, UTIs can take along time to go even when on antibiotics, your vet might suggest a further couple of weeks on the septrin, having said that you would have expected some improvement by now, but she seems to be going backwards with the condition. Look how long I was battling with Pinkie's UTI infection, and then it never cleared up poor little thing. I will keep my fingers crossed that it isn't a stone. Sending (((HUGS)) to you and your little furries. :(

Sorry to hear that about Connie. What a wretched day for you!

But it looks like you are in good hands with your vets and that you are doing the right thing.

If it happens again within the next few weeks, I'd go for another x-ray in case there is a stone that's too big to pass. Of course she may have just passed a small one!

Keep going!

Oh love so sorry to hear little Connie is unwell again :( gosh she's been thru it all hasn't she :(
Sending her heaps of gentle little cuddles and kisses and for you HUGS xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I do hope they can figure out just what's going on with her..... maybe as the others have said another course of antibiotics just might 'hit it on the head' ........some bugs can be very hard to move and like us it can take more than just the usual dose :{
take care love xxxxxxxxxxxxx xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Just catching up and so sorry to hear that Connie is unwell again. Fingers crossed the meds help her :)

Connie is still squeaking but she didn't go for a wee whilst she was out so I don't no if there is still blood in her urine. She tends to squeak and lift her bum up whilst going for a poo as well. Is this normal with a UTI?
To make matters worse, OH is saying that we can't afford much more treatment especially X rays and an operation if she has a stone. He keeps saying that he isn't prepared to pay out so much money 8... I really hate him at the minute as I am already worried about her so don't know what I'm going to do if she doesn't improve. I so wish he was an animal lover like me :0

If Connie goes on like that, I think you will have to go to the vets and check out whether she's got something stuck somewhere, probably the uretra.

If she stops peeing at all, she's in grave danger and should be seen asap - of course these things always happen as soon as the vets close for the weekend...!

Better put Connie on a surface (old light kitchen towel ot bath towel or newspaper etc.) where you can check whether she is still urinating/bleeding (and eating - if she looses her appetite you know that it is very serious)!

Has your vet got an emergency number on their answering machine? Better check now, and if necessary ask for advice from there. But be aware that out of hours visits can be VERY expensive! Ask for their fees first and only go if they insist that Connie is seen immediately, e.g. if she really has stopped peeing at all.

If it's some consolation, my hubby is not too struck on piggies, either. I'm paying from my own savings - which have shrunk noticebly...

Sorry, I've just come back home form a day out (Mother-in-laws Day today).

I don't want to panic you any further, but this doesn't sound good at all.

All my love to you and Connie

Claire, I am wondering if you should speak to Debbie about Zithromax. I have heard she has experience with this for treating stubborn infections - may be worth a try since Baytril and Septrin have not done the trick.

One thing I have noticed though is that in the few days since correcting my pigs diet (according to the calcium: phosphorus ratio) the intermittent squeaking when peeing/pooping that a couple of my own pigs do has stopped - and no calcium spots at all despite having parsley and kale daily. It seems the balance of those two minerals played a big part in the bladder issues of the two girls.

*Hugs* to you, I hope this can be sorted quickly, for Connie's sake and yours. x
