Background for anyone who might not be aware is that Connie is one of my older ladies. She lives with Violet and together they are collectively known as Hinge and Bracket as they are a bit cranky. Violet had a spay about 8 weeks ago. Yesterday was Connie's turn. She has been undergoing investigations into lumps, bloating, hair loss, barbering and general illness for a couple of months. Finally a scan revealed she has one very badly cystic ovary and cysts on the other one, too but she's been battling a chest infection so it's been a matter of getting her fit enough to have the anaesthetic.
Connie had her op yesterday. She had both ovaries and a suspicious lump from her hip area removed. She's shaved up both sides with sutures on both sides and one hip and looks rather pitiful. I was syringe feeding her very couple of hours yesterday and through the night but at the 6am feed this morning she asked me to stop sooner than I had planned and then went in and filled her face with hay. Since then she's been tucking in to hay, pellets and veggies. She did sound a bit grunty last night from the GA but she's on ABs already and her breathing is not compromised and she has not sounded grunty since the early hours. I plan to attempt a syringe top up later before bed if she will cooperate, but her appetite has certainly returned. Urine and poo output are returning towards normal. And she and Violet are back to their normal cranky behaviour with each other which is strangely reassuring.
It's early days but I'm cautiously optimistic as things seem to be improving little by little.

Well done, Connie! It sounds pretty par for the course and par for a good recovery.

The important thing after a major operation is to hang on in there until the appetite kicks in again; don't worry about any weight loss or few/funny poos in the first couple of days! That will sort itself out on its own eventually once the digestive factory gets back into the swing. It is important to keep in mind that the poo output always reflects what has gone on a day or (if the guts are slowed down a bit) two days ago, so one shouldn't panic if there aren't any after hours of op and recovery without much food intake. The crucial part at that stage is simply to keep the guts ticking over.

Ideally, the appetite kicks in within the first 24 hours. My Cariad took about until 3 am in the middle of the night, but she never looked back from then on in. The churned up sore body takes 2-3 days to settle down and start healing, but hopefully Connie is getting better in herself with every passing day. ;)

Wishing Connie a fast and full recovery from the op

Here's to a "hawwwwwwww:cool:" happy healthy Hinge & Bracket :D
keep it up ladies:nod:

Way to go connie! Showing up the young uns! Xx

Connie is now really starting to look better in herself. She's only about 20g under her average weight before the operation, is eating like a horse and is becoming extremely feisty. It's a battle to give her her AB and to weigh her as she's clearly fed up with being interfered with. She has started legging it when I come in to the room. I'm trying not to take it personally and am taking this as positive sign that she's well on the road to recovery.

excellent news! Well done beautiful one, continued healing vibes being sent x

Yes feisty means she getting her fight back, great news! She'll forgive you once she recovers, it hurts your feelings but she will get over it, my shy piggy totally regressed last time I had to medicate her, took her 2 months to get over
