I've just seen a post from The Guinea Pig Vet (Ellie Whitehead) that says she will now start offering conscious dentals for guinea pigs. She went to see Simon at Cat & Rabbit in Northampton to observe the procedure. Here's her blog post about it. Post | Theguineapigvet This is a positive for those who are near her vet practice.

@sport_billy @VickiA @Wiebke I'm not sure where to post this correctly so if it's okay, kindly move it to where it should be. Thank you xx

Thank you! That is good to know! It's not yet turned up in my newsfeed.

Great news. Like Lady Kelly I’m equidistant from Simon and Ellie, and used Ellie last year when Simon was away and one of mine had a bladder stone problem. Always nice to have a Plan B vet!

I saw this and even though I have never been to either vet - good to know there is one more local than Simon - I live in nottingham so Ellie isn't far away.. But I am hoping I never need any dental work ;)

This is good news and I hope Ellie starts to gain lots of experience. I think we need to remember that Simon has perfected his skill over more than 13 years, so hopefully Ellie will now get the opportunity to gain more knowledge and perfect her skill too!

It is great that another vet is taking it up because there is such a need!

Cavy dentistry is very much a matter of experience, like most skills; but having somebody else available and hopefully more vets willing to do this, to learn and be willing to communicate their experience would be GREAT!
And Ellie has got the advantage that she can ask Simon for advice when she needs some... I hope that it snowballs from there!

We just have to hope that they are going to coordinate their holidays!

I really hope so! I know it is many years off, but I feared that once the Maddock's retired, all would be lost!

I sincerely hope that Ellie's willingness to take on the baton from Simon is going to act as a signal to the wider UK vet community that his way and his experiences are acceptable vet practice and worth learning, based on the success he has had where other vets have failed.

I saw the post on Facebook earlier today. Great news that another vet is learning from Simon, hopefully this may encourage others to do so.

There is also Jess at Dart Valley Vets in Brixton, Devon that does conscious dentals for mild problems and has all the equipment and has in the past been in contact with Simon. We have taken Bill to her once when Simon was on holiday and she tidied up Bill’s front teeth lovely and had a look at Ted’s doggy molar too out of interest. She is a super vet and loves guinea pigs and very interested in guinea pig dentistry. She slipped the dental brace on Ted’s mouth so I could see the molar that gives us all so much trouble, guinea pigs teeth are quite amazing to see, never thought they would look like they do. Her nurse is really good too, knows how to hold piggies properly, obviously kept them at some time I would think, Jess always uses her when she does the dentals as she knows she has full control.

One of my biggest fears is this, once I knoe Simon and Kim retire, that's it for small furrys for me, il have no more. Il have to get a dog if I want a pet, reptiles isn't an option, as we don't have a reptile vet in Northampton anymore

I believe Craig at Chine House in Leicestershire deals with reptiles. I have seen people taking tortoises and fish to him before

Il have to let me neighbour know, he has a gecko, and I think he's a bit concerned about what vet he would use in the future if needed. Thanks 👍

Fish!? Brilliant, didn’t think we had many of those kind of vets in the uk! Good to know for my beloved Arnie the goldfish, although train travel with a goldie would be a nightmare!
Great news about Ellie the vet, we definitely need more piggy dentists
