Hello everyone.
I have 2 male guinea pigs... Both around 2/3months old. They have a space of about 1.5m wide and 2.5m long... And when I'm home I open that up, and put big boxes of hay, hide food, sit in with them. I Explain all this because I'm trying super hard to make them haaapppyyy. Anyhoo 1 of them is a real baby, excitable about every new thing on the floor, excitable about everything, steals the food from the other, is the first to popcorn, the first to explore. The other is a little old man even at 3months old. He seems a bit grumpy in his ways. However he grumbles (I think you call it purring) ALOT. He does it when the excitable one is annoying him which is understandable. But he also does it when he's just wandering around. As I said before I want them to be happy. So I'm worried he isn't.
Is constant grumbling ok!? I don't know what else I have to do 🤣.
He sometimes popcorn and then grumbles at the same time... Talk about mixed signals haha.
Anyhoo any help in understanding if it's just his little grumpy personality or there is something I Can do
Thank youuu

Rumble-strutting is very common boar behaviour. It ranges from making their presence known to measuring up with other boars/showing off to sows to expressing their dominance. Even though he is not the most outgoing, he is likely the one in charge of the group.
Displeasure is a very short sharp, deep grrr.

Please be aware that you always get differences in personalities. Guinea pigs are prey animals with their own social dynamics and behaviours and not naturally born animated cuddly toys.

Please click on this link for our new owners guide collection. It contains lots of helpful information on making friends with and understanding guinea pig behaviours and their instincts as well as what you need to check as a new owner. The collectionalso helps you with boar care, diet and to learn what is normal and not and when you need to see a vet.
Please save up for a vet fund right from the start so you can afford vet care whenever you need it - guinea pigs are small animals that cannot wait in an emergency or with a serious illness.

Thank you so much. I knew that it was a dominance thing but it was just the 'how much' he does it.... Is it normal that he is in connnsstttaaant dominance mode. And it doesn't mean that he is unhappy about life!?

No it doesn’t mean he is unhappy, it is just his way of making sure everybody knows that he is top pig!
They are in their teenage, hormonal months from now until around 14 months of age so you will see plenty of dominance behaviour during this time!

Ahhh this makes me Super happy to read. He is so funny... Wandering around grumbling at everything.
Thank you so much for letting known its normal. I'm Sat with them now, he is sat on my legs calmly the other is scooting around the room Like he is on speed 🤣
