Hi, I made a thread about a week ago about my guinea pig Pippa constantly bum digging at her cage mate looking for her poos after Pippas had become small and light brown. I was recommended that I put her on some probiotics which shes been on for about a week. Her poos are darker now but still small and the bum digging has sopped however, she is constantly making a rumbling sound puffing up her fur and trying to mount Maisy her cage mate (they are both female.) Although shes eating drinking and just acting in general completely normal she feels and looks a bit thinner. Shes only lost around 9 grams since we weighed her about 10 days ago. Shes gone down to 1149 grams. I know this isn't very much weight loss but should we be concerned with this constant bothering her cage mate. She normally does this on occasion but its never been this constant.

Hi! I would not worry about any weight loss under 50g/2 oz - just the difference between a fully or empty bladder is 10g, not to mention a fully/empty belly. The overall weight is also very healthy.

However, if the rumbling is constant, then Pippa is currently suffering from a hormonal surge, likely caused by a small active ovarian cyst. This is not rare in adult sows and can be treated with hormones (chorulon injections) these days if the behaviour becomes very disruptive. Hormonal behaviour can go in hand with a bit of a weight loss due to Pippa being constantly in season.

It may be worth having her checked for ovarian cysts by having a conscious ultrasound. My sow became more aggressive, rumbling and mounting. She then developed small, teardropped poos which was her gut slowing down due to the cysts.

Other symptoms include vaginal discharge, hair loss usually on the sides and hips and crusty nipples.

Yes, preferably a piggy savvy one! Otherwise, you have to sit it out for a number a of weeks. Most often, it dies down after a couple of months or so. I would not opt for a spay unless there is a very good reason for it and/or you have a very good operating vet.
