Hi, I haven't been on this forum for a couple of years, mainly because I've not needed to ask for help in anything specific, I'm usually ok with my lot. I have a few more pigs than before and one of which is actually my girlfriend's Christmas present and is who I want to talk about.

For a couple of days she has been shutting her right eye, as though fighting to stay awake if that makes more sense, but her left eye is fully open. I clean her eyes from bedding every day when I handle her, as she does burrow under it, which I thought was the problem, turns out its not but it could be scratched and just a bit tender, but its not red, its not watery, its not swollen and its not crusty.

Now, I don't rush my lot to the vets when they are acting perfectly normal otherwise and its not something I know needs immediate attention, as she is acting fine and I'm not overly concerned about it, which is why I've come here to ask if this has happened to someone else's pig and what it could be?

I will try bathing her eye later with some cotton wool to try to flush any fine hairs out, but in the meantime there is no harm in asking. Also, yes she's a present but my girlfriend is fully aware she's getting the little one, she named her in-fact, and she's also fully experienced. The reason I've got her for my girlfriend is that she was looking for a companion for her lone girl, so killing two birds with one stone, I got her a Christmas present and companion for her girl at the same time! Just wanted to say that in case I got replies of hatred thrown at me! :))

Thanks in advance!

hiyah,

i dont the answer sorry, but i wanted to say i sooo wish my bloke would buy me a piggy for chrimbo! :))

Hope the little one is ok x

I have a piggy who has a hair on her face that often curls into her eye and I keep it trimmed. even when it is gone she often closes that eye and I just wipe it with some warm water now and then and she is fine.

It can be something stuck under her eyelid.

I had a piggy once who managed to completely wedge a whole blade of grass once and fair bit of soft hay at another occasion under her lid and needed a trip to the vets to have each removed and the incurred corneal ulcer to be treated properly.

Please try to gently flush the eye with saline solution (1tsp of salt mixed into 1 pint of boiled and then cooled water). If it doesn't stop, have her checked by vet.

I'm not afraid of pulling them about a bit lol so eyelids have been checked and are completely clean from bedding, like I said, I thoroughly clean them every day when I handle her. I've not checked today but last night I found a tiny hair had poked into it which I removed. The trouble is, she burrows so much into her bedding that I can't tell if its that causing it to shut or not. I could give her a house so she doesn't have to burrow but for an already nervous animal, its not wise to so I'm kinda stuck what I can do, but obviously a vet trip is next if it doesn't improve.

Also, I'd do that with skin wound, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable adding salt water to her eye, I'd just use warm water to bathe it in.

From what you are describing it does sound like something is/was irritating the eye, or that she sustained a minor injury.

Does the eye look healthy otherwise - is it sunken, or is there any cloudiness or any visible marks on the surface of the eye? What bedding do you use that she is getting into her eyes?

I think the bath did the job, touch wood she's not been shutting it fully as much.

The only thing I've found odd is that that eye is smaller than the other. Basically the eyelids look closer together than the left eyelids. I know about lethal pigs, and know that they don't have to be always pure white (Rose has a black splodge on her nose so it kinda looks like her breeder was trying for Roans etc) but I will have to inform the pet store I got her from if she is.... because she could also be pregnant due to one of their brilliant staff members thinking it was fine to house a male a female together for 2 weeks!

But that's beside the point. Her eye seems better now but I will post a pic of her in a new thread so people can see the difference in her eyes!
