Hey piggie people! How old are your piggies? I’ve been having this constant worry lately that my piggies will get sick and pass away suddenly and I can’t seem to let it go. Has anyone else ever felt like this? How can I deal with this?
Thanks for reading,
Charlotte

Hi there, I have 2 youngsters, a 1 year old and a 4 or 5 year old. It always seems a roller-coaster worrying about piggies, then all being fine for a while. This morning I couldn't find one and then I worry I've been burgled and piggy taken, which is totally unlikely to happen! Is there anything you're worried about in particular?

Not necessarily, I’ve thought about potential genetic conditions I don’t know about, or them just passing of unknown cause, and it’s really scary to think about!

I'm very new to guniea pigs, this is my first pair i have ever owned. Mother is 8 months and baby is 6 weeks. I'm always worried about them even when i sleep . i have fell involve with them already.(only had them 2 days) I can't let it go either. They are in safe hands have lovely home , food, water toys etc. i do have a motherly instant tho so maybe thats why.

It is scary worrying about losing them. It's the price of love unfortunately ❤️ It's worrying when you're a new owner, whether you're doing the right thing. Hopefully the worry will lessen over time? The forum helps lessen my worry because there's so much good information on it.

Hello Charlotte, I have anxiety and since I got Percy and Pepper this has definitely gotten worse. I love them so much so I’m just trying to deal with it the best I can. I do sometimes think if I didn’t get them it would be one less thing to worry about. Then I feel mean for thinking it.

All we can do is our best for them. As long as you are doing that then it’s all good.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I also struggle it’s anxiety, ocd, and adhd. My boys are only around 1 1/2 years old. You’re all right, all we can do is love them with everything and give them the best lives we can. Thank you so much for reading and replying I feel better! 💛

If you’ve got any worries just ask question on the forum and we can reassure you. 😃

Hello,

Pet anxiety is much more common than people realise. And all of us on this forum can fully empathise with what you are feeling.

In cases like this (and we’ve all been there - I had a full year of unbelievable anxiety last year when nursing my sick piggy), it’s best to try retrain your way of thinking. We don’t want to waste any precious time with our fur babies worrying. We want to be enjoying every single second that we have with them.

It takes some practice but try saying “no” to your own thoughts, and switch your brain to something positive. It takes work, but does start to make you feel better. When your brain starts to worry about something negative (e.g. a pet getting sick, or losing a pet), immediately say NO to yourself. Put a stop to the negative thoughts and start to list and enjoy all the little moments in which your pets bring you happiness, and know there’s much more happy moments to come!

I am very much an over-thinker and a worrier, but I’ve recently (with the help of my dressage coach), been working on these tactics. Our only limitation in life, is our own mind.

I’d hate for you to waste precious time with your piggies by worrying and fearing the worst. Go enjoy them! Love them as much as you can and let them bring you love and happiness in return. Life is too short for anything else. Enjoy the here and now. Some bridges can wait to be crossed, or may never be crossed….

All the best 😊

Thank you SO much for this helpful advice! I will definitely try this! Thank you for your kind words and support! 💛

I think most pet owners worry about the “what if’s” It’s because to love and care for them 😊 I was told once that only worry about things you can control or change for the better. Everyone worries but if you can compartmentalise that worry for say 5 minutes a day then put it to bed and get on with your life and enjoy your piggies. Live for the moment, try not to worry about the next day, or the next year. Enjoy them for now! 😁

We have four piggies all boars three of them are around 5/6 months and then my other boar Chewbacca aka Chewie is supposed to be 9 weeks but they got the age mixed up so he is about half a year old? Possibly but I absolutely love him to bits he is a teddy type black red and white’ it’s totally normal to over think as long as you don’t stay like that we all have thoughts just don’t let them control you :D

Hey,
Yes I suffer from and overthinking, anxiety and totally relate to all of you! After losing my guinea pig February my anxiety has gotten so much worse and I've been overthinking any little thing with my piggies.

A few things that help me + what my psychologist has told me:
- schedule in some worry time - so just have 10 - 15 mins a day and just worry. Write it all out, whatever you need to do. And then if you have anxious thoughts outside of your worry time, try and push those thoughts in to the back of your mind, just say "no I can worry about that later in my worry time"
- Writing it all out and thinking about the logical side - e.g "yes I'm worried about this but my piggy is still...running around as normal for example"
- Just take each day as it comes, and enjoy every single day you have with your piggies.

I hope a few of those things helped but like everyone else has said, totally normal to have these thoughts, it just means you love them!
❤️❤️❤️

I do the same. But, we have to cherish these little critters while they are here. :) I recently got a cam so I can watch them while I'm at work! It gives me a peace of mind. :D Plus, I get to see what they're up to while mommy works during the day lol.
