The construction of the first new hutch has begun! :)

My husband is making it for me ... well not for me, for my piggies .... but I think he would quite happily put me in it sometimes and he has made the comment that I would nearly fit in there! ;D ;D
Thinking about it, should I be worried about his weird thoughts?! ? ;D

It is 5ft long by 2ft deep. It will house two or three piggies depending how my companion matching goes soon.
It will go in the shed so won't need to be painted.
It will have a bedroom compartment and the rest will have mesh fronts. Do you think I need three opening doors or just one for the bedroom, a fixed mesh panel in the middle and then a large mesh opening door?

Any thoughts please?

PS. I am really looking forward to getting my new toys etc. to go in there and I would like one of those twig doom type thingy for my piggies to sit under.

Looks great so far and that sounds enough doors. A hinged roof can be a good idea for eay access too.

I would stain the hutch with pet friendly stain (P@H do it) to protect it and also line the floor with either some offcut of lino, vinyl stick on tiles or correx to help protect it from pee :D

I think that was a backhand compliment from your OH, if you can fit in there you must be petite ;D

How lovely that your OH is making this for you and the piggies, 5' is a good size too. Some of my hutches are 5' + and I just have two doors split down the middle. If you have a fixed one it may be a little bit more difficult to access for cleaning. I don't have a sleep compartment on mine as they have wooden hidey houses inside the hutch itself. If they are in the shed then that gives them quite a bit of protection anyway. I like the openess of mine, it suits me. Good for airflow in the summer and I cover up one door in the winter. None of mine are stained or painted either - has been ok.

Looking forward to seeing the finished article. If you have a look under housing and photo albums on my website you can see some of my hutches too. Cheers x www.lbgpr.co.uk

Summerleaze I did a link to your website and there was Nigel again ... looking at me! I am so in love with Nigel :-* :-* and envious of Lucinda because she is adopting him ;D.

Anyway, no work was done on the hutch today as hubby was at work all over the weekend but he is home tomorrow .... yippee. Construction begins it's second phase!

I am going to have two of these which will stack on top of each other. Thanks for the tips about putting something on the floor. I don't do that in my other hutches he made me, but will this time.

PS. I am 5ft 4" so with a little squeezing I would fit in there!

got a vision of you in the hutch and piggies in your bed lol

I think my husband would sometimes prefer a guinea pig to me, they don't talk as much! :x .... the only problem is that he is allergic to animal fur and it affects his breathing.

Well, construction is nearly over. Apparently Sunday is the day for them moving in. I opted for three doors ... one for the bedroom and two for the "lounge" area.

It looks great. I bought a fab hay rack from eBay and a twiggy tunnel thingy and new dish plus got from cardboard tubes from work ... I am really excited for when they move in ... am I mad, or what?

PS. Obviously construction will begin on the next one after that ... husband dear! x>>

Really pleased it is all going well, hope to see the pics soon (with the residents of course !)

Can't wait to see the finished piece! Your garden looks lovely by the way :)

Well moving in day for the three piggies did go ahead on Sunday evening ... well after the golf Open Championship had finished for my hubby! :) Nope, he wasn't in it, just sat with his feet up watching it with a chilled lager. Well, I suppose he deserved it after all his hard work.

As suggested, I got some cushioned vinyl from a local carpet shop - a bargain for £5 ... laminate flooring design too. It looked really posh and plenty left for the next new hutch!

I am really pleased with it :<> :<>.
The piggies were a little overwhelmed at first and didn't venture into the lounge until the next day. I will take another photo shortly of them all cosy in the hutch in my shed (my gp shed is behind the trellis in that photo).

Hubby has now made me another hutch, exactly the same to go on top of the first one!

Don't I just love him! x>>

Anyway, I am not sure how many members know about the surprise birth from my blind sow, Princess, of a little boar and a little sow. Princess is only 14 weeks herself, I have owned her for 7 weeks ... so she was 3 weeks pregnant when I rescued her. Sadly, the little baby sow didn't make it, I think she was born dead but the little boar, now called Junior, is fighting fit and very lively.

My daughters and I have spoke about us keeping little Junior, but hadn't told their dad ... my hubby. Anyway, last night as he laid down in bed after visiting our eldest daughter at her flat, he said "why am I the last to know that Junior might be staying with us?" rolleyes .... I think another hutch build might be on it's way! :))

Well, hubby has now made three of these hutches. Don't I just love him! x>>

Although he has been working long hours because he is being made redundant next year after 35 years with the same company, he knew that I was really keen to get Shaun and Junior the same accommodation as my other five piggies- so worked really hard inbetween shifts for me.

Moving in day won't be until Monday ... unfortunately ... because he is working 12 hours days from today until Sunday rolleyes
Here's to Monday then! :)
