Hi folks, I'm back again hoping for advice. Having lost two boys in the last few months I'm not ready to lose my third and final chap just yet! He will be 6 in January.
Fudge has had a bladder infection on and off for months, it's gone from having red wee to blobs of red in urine and back again, he was on baytril which never worked, then my vet put him on septrin which seemed to do something after a few days, he stayed on that for severall weeks, then unfortunately the blood was back so the vet put him back on baytril, the blood stopped briefly before going but tonight it's back. I've collected a nice amount ready for a vet visit I'm thinking of doing tomorrow.
Poor chap had steadily lost weight from 1.065 down to 0.952 over the last few months (weight up and down daily) he does eat tho not as much as I'd like, some days not a lot, he is on critical care which I think is keeping him going. He loves grass still thankfully tho last week he gave me a fright for two days by refusing to eat it, that was scary as I though that was it! I'm giving him all his favourites but he sometimes just picks at it. By morning he has usually had a bit more.
At my insistence the vet prescribed a probiotic (never used before) which he doesn't mind. I give him 1/2 a vit c tablet a day to help as well.
A scan a few weeks ago was inconclusive, no stones present but vet could see an inflamed bladder which she said was the uti.
I mentioned giving him barley water or cranberry juice but she said it wasn't a good idea.
My vet was concerned at his weight loss so I know where she is going on this.
I just want to help the poor boy, he squeaks a bit when he wees so it must sting and I've noticed he grits his teeth a bit so could be in pain. He isn't keen on my stroking his back end and grumbles at me.
I've noticed he is drinking a lot more water this last few days, over 1/2 a bottle in a day where's he would barely drink 1/4. My vet reckoned he had kidney issues months ago so is this kicking in now I wonder.
I wonder if it would be kinder to Fudge and have him pts.
Your honest thoughts would be gratefully received.

You may find he has kidney problems now, my little P was just passed 5 had bladder problems for over 11 months he was Xray'd religiously every 4 weeks after 11 months of Xray's we finally found 2 stones in his ureter he had major surgery, 6 months stone free when they came back and before his operation we did bloods by this point my little man's kidneys had just about given up so I opted to put him to sleep.

I do think bloods are worthwhile before your little man gets to poorly, you can rule out kidneys and diabetes.

I also found my little P needed his teeth done regularly and tramadol was a super painkiller for him. It's never easy having a sick pig, I do hope your little man gets well soon! x

I feel for you, I really do :( My Connie had a very stubborn UTI which just wouldn't go away. She was on Baytril to begin with and then moved to Septrin which she was on and off. It would get to the point where we thought things were getting better but then the blood would return along with crystals :( She had a couple of x rays which showed nothing.

Her problems lasted for around 6 months where she had lost a fair amount of weight in that time until an x ray showed an inflamed bladder and sludge.

My vet opted to open her up where nothing unusual was found apart from sludge. Connie was given a bladder flush.

After this, Connie was both blood and pain free so we thought we had cracked it although having bloods done was the next step. Sadly, Connie died 5 days later at just 18 months old :(

I strongly suggest you take Flintstones advise and ask for bloods to be taken. Connie never had the chance but after things I have learned since then, I think there could have been an underlying problem.

Good luck and all the best for Fudge xx

Wow that sounds exactly the same. I will take Fudge back to the vets tomorrow along with his wee sample.
As he is underweight will a blood test cause a lot of discomfort for him, surely the vet won't need too much blood from him?

It could be cystitis rather than a bacterial infection. Trying cranberry juice and/or barley water won't hurt him. Did your vet say why it was a bad idea?

I had a piggy with a bout of cystitis and found that 1 cystaid capsule a day worked wonders. After the initial few days I was able to drop this down to half a capsule. It's a cystitis supplement for cats but is safe to use in piggies. If your vet won't give it to you, you can but it online as its not a prescription product.

Hi Amanda, no I don't recall a reason why not, just if I remember rightly something she wouldn't recommend.
I've just been to check on Fudge ( I do late piggy checks when poorly) and given him some critical care which he wolfed down and I've left him chomping on a lump of cucumber. That's made me feel bette, last night I was the opposite.
The vet did say give him loads of cucumber as its watery (and his favourite) but he subsequently went off it, typical, so I'm glad he likes it again.
I'll take him back to the vet tomorrow and ask for a blood test, I've been looking up about piggies and diabetes. He has some of symptoms so I do wonder why he hasn't been tested before now. It's worth a try.

I would be inclined to have a full urinalysis done first if you haven't already. A urine dip stick test will tell you if he has diabetes, where as a blood test is quite a large procedure in a guinea pig. It requires a general anaesthetic and taking blood from the main vein draining back to the heart. As you can imagine, there are risks involved, especially given his age. Personally, I would trial some cystaid, get him on some pain relief (pain is often responsible for the eating less than normal) and get a urinalysis done.

How is Fudge doing this morning?

As Amanda says, having bloods done is a big procedure for guinea pigs. With Connie, we had expiored other avenues including cranberry juice and endless urinalysis (I lost count of how many urine samples I collected).

My vet was willing to take bloods but like I say, this was the last resort.

Morning. Well Fudge has eaten a bowl of fresh grass and I'm about to give him his first dose of Baytril. Vet said to give him 0.2 neat rather than watered down. It does go down better that way actually. He seems a bit grumpy which is understandable if he is in pain. I've a vet appt this afternoon so will enquire about pain relief and I'm hoping the urine sample I have will shed some light. I'm keen to try the cystitis medication so will ask about that. Interestingly I've been looking at foods that can aggravate piggy bladders and will make some amendments to his diet, I used to supplement my boys grass breakfast in the winter with spinach which they loved. I now know I shouldn't have given them so much.grrrr
I will get some cranberries but can't see him wanting to eat them as they are bitter. He didn't like cranberries much and winced a bit before spitting it out.
I'll try anything at the moment, but concerned with the cold weather setting in and his immune system is low.

When you see your vet, ask for some probiotic along with the metacam (painkiller) as Baytril can be harsh on a guinea pigs gut. A probiotic will help with that.

You don't have to feed him cranberries but it is unsweetned cranberry juice you need. Ocean spray light from a supermarket is a popular choice. Just dilute it down if it is too bitter and syringe as much as he will drink to Fudge. Some guinea pigs will drink it from a water bottle but only if they like the taste.

It is true that guinea pigs shouldn't have too much calcium. My girls are now on a low calcium diet. Unfortunately, cabbage, spinach, kale, broccoli and parsley are high in calcium so my pigs only have these a couple of times a week. Not altogether.

Do you live in a hard water area? It may be worth filtering the drinking water before giving to Fudge. I live in a soft water area but still filter the water :)

Good luck at the vets :)

Well our vet visit was a sad one. Fudges urine showed no blood despite it being pink, tiny traces protein present and she checked for diabetes and cystitus but nothing. The vet fiddled about quite a while with his pot of wee i must say! Due to his urine being so concentrated she indicated his kidneys were not functioning properly. This has been mentioned before now.
I wanted him to have a pain relief but before she gave him a jab she warned me it could trigger renal failure so I opted not to as I thought he can't be in constant pain or he would stop eating altogether. This morning he wheeked for his grass. But as I type he is sitting on my shoulder gritting his teeth grumbling at me when I stroke him.
I mentioned having a blood test but did agree at his age and current health situation it wouldn't be beneficial to put his through the discomfort just to confirm our fears of kidney failure which is untreatable.
It's left now to keep an eye on him and if he stops eating or fits then that means his kidneys are packing up and i will have to have him pts.
I've to continue with the baytril and probiotic. Poor Fudge, looks like its getting to the end of the road :(

But I might add I'm not giving up on him, I'm off to buy some cranberry juice, celery and parsley to add to his dinner.
He is back in his cage munching on hay in his favourite box sitting in the afternoon sun. Bless.
He will be 6 soon so he hasn't done too bad really especially when I read so e of the tragic stories on here.

Aww, I am sorry you didn't receive better news :(

I haven't any experience with kidney failure but I am thankful you are not going to give up on him.

All you can do is carry on with what you are doing and make sure Fudge drinks enough. He sounds happy enough for now and he will let you know when his time is coming.

6 is a good age and you should be proud of yourself for that.

Please do keep us updated xx

guinea pig has cystitis

Hi guys, I'm new on here and wanted some advice. Ive got a guinea pig called choco, shes now 2years and 3 months now and quite a large guinea pig ( at 1.23kg). Today the vet has ordered to give her 0.48 twice daily for 10 days. Does that sound about right? I'm also worried about giving her baytril as read lots of stories about it. I hope she will be ok? :( Please write back soon, thank you xx

Hi and welcome :)

Baytril is okay for guinea pigs although Septrin is a better antibiotic for UTI's.

If Choco is having baytril, did your vet prescribe a probiotic too? This is recommended as baytril can be harsh on a guinea pigs gut and a probiotic will help to settle the stomach.

Hopefully the baytril will work but if it doesn't, try asking your vet for septrin.

thank you:) Well he didnt mention any probiotic and i was saying to help to pls give the septrin but he refused saying baytril is better. Do * think choco should have it for the full 10 days? I'm a bit worried now as dont want her to get side effects from it, esp a large dose like that. Which probiotic shall i give her? Thank you x

Some vets won't prescribe Septrin as it is off license for use on piggies, it is Perfectly safe however. We have had success with baytril for UTI's in the past.

With baytril I'd certainly use a pro biotic - we use avipro plus [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Avipro-Plus-Pack-Size-300g/dp/B004FGF23K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1352753301&sr=8-2"]Avipro Plus (Pack Size: 300g Pot): Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies[/ame] you can sprinkle it on food or disolve it in a little water and syringe it to piggies, ours love the taste. Hope Coco feels enter soon
