I'm hoping someone can help. Cookie has had severe runny diarrhoea all morning and is sitting in the corner of the cage fluffed up into a ball. She feels very cold. I put a fleece blanket in the cage to keep her warm and I'm just giving her hay and cucumber to keep her hydrated. Is there anything else I can do or should I just try to get her an emergency appointment at the vets?

i would definately try the vets if its severe.

I would also drop the cucumber as it may make it worse, just hay.

Fingers crossed for Cookie, poor thing, had it just happened overnight or is there background?

Yes it just happened overnight. She was fine last night so it's come on really quickly.

blimey, i have just been reading your other thread about the other piggy that passed away, makes you wonder if it is in any way connected?

Pets at Home really need to sort their ways! grrrr

I'm just off the phone to the vets. Got an appointment for 2.50pm at my local vet. Taylors vet in cathkin. Not sure how much experience they have with small animals but they do have a good reputation. Unfortunately Apex vets are in Falkirk so too far for me to travel from Glasgow.
Thanks for the advice everyone and I'll post later to let you know how the appointment goes. Fingers crossed that she's ok. Does anyone have any idea how much I can expect to pay if she needs antibiotics?

I'm not sure and they do tend to vary. perhaps approx £40-£50 including the consultation?

I would try to get some probiotic in her aswell, but i dont know what other people would think of this, only my opinion.

yes, definitely get her some probiotics if she's going to be taking antibiotics. Bio-lapis or Pro-C are both good

I think it's simply nice to give them a syringe or two of bio-lapis diluted in water as it rinses the bad bitter taste of antibiotics.

I have some Pro-C so will keep giving her that. She's still huddled in the corner of the cage and she's not drinking. The diarrhoea is getting worse, hope the vet is able to give her something.

hope cookie is ok, definately no veg till it sorts itself out, just hay and pellets or muesli x

Fingers crossed for Cookie.

Another good vet in Glasgow is Champion Vets, in Ibrox & Paisley - they've always been excellent and really knowledgeable about guinea pigs. Not too far from Cathkin either.

Good luck xx

Hi everyone! Just a quick update on Cookie, the vet said it could be E.coli or clostridia. She got an antibiotic injection and some Enrofloxacin to be given at home. I'm taking her back next week for a check up. She's still quite cold and a bit fluffed up and is just sitting in the middle of the cage looking depressed. I had to move her cage mate Smudge into another cage just incase it is contagious. Fingers crossed that the antibiotics kick in soon, feel so bad for her.

awww poor thing, thanks for the update. Really hope she is feeling better soon.

Did you find out what was the matter with the other one from Pets at Home?

Pets at home never contacted me again with the autopsy results for Patch so I doubt that it was ever carried out.I think it might have been kidney stones though as she was making a high pitched wheeking noise in the days before she died, it dawned on me too late that it was connected to her passing urine.

Hi, Cookie seems a little better this morning. Thanks for asking. I gave her antibiotics this morning and she cuddled up to me for a while. She's been nibbling on some hay and has managed to take some water from a small bowl but she's not drinking from her bottle. The diarrhoea seems to have stopped though so hope that she's on the mend.

I have dealt with clostridia before and it is quite a persisitant bug so make sure you keep on top of any dire rear relapses, it can only be diagnosed fully by a stool sample (poo) but the good news is that it does respond to treatment, however repeat treatments are usually required if the bug is being particulairly persistant.

E coli is a nasty strep bug and is contageous, I have never dealt with it myself but again it is treatable and it seems you have managed to catch it quick enough.

Both bugs are likely to have come from dirty living conditions - I assume they are P@H piggies, I would contact them and make them aware of the problems you have had with cookie, chances are the same stock will also have it. It is highly unlikely that either of these two bugs could have come from your housing arrangements or food that you have fed.

I am so glad cookie is feeling better, lots of hugs and get well soon cookie

Sorry just caught up with Cookie's thread :...
Poor little girlie :( Whee all hope that the meds help her and that her little tummy will settle down......... have you some probiotics? it's easily purchased from the vets :)
Sending some healing wheeeeeeks and loves from us all XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Hoping that Smudge will be ok too, she'll be wondering what's happened to her mate Cookie :(

Is there any update on Cookie?

I've been worrying about her :(

me too, had a very sleepless night last night and lots of things were going through my mind!

Sending more healing vibes for your girl x

Hi everyone. Cookie seems a bit better but she's not taking much water or hay, she lost 30g in weight overnight. Smudge has also lost 10g in weight because she's missing her friend and she's not been eating much. I have the cages side by side but Cookie's been hiding away most of the time.
I disinfected the cages again this morning and I had to give Cookie her first bath as she was really smelly. The diarrhoea has stopped and she's back to passing solid stools but they are really foul smelling.

^ Solid stools sounds promising though... that must mean she's getting better. Surely?

I hope so, I just hope the smell gets better too! I'm not sure what to do if she keeps losing weight and refusing food though. I'm just giving her hay and nuggets just now. I suppose she must have taken some hay during the night since the cage was full of poo this morning. Fingers crossed that she makes a full recovery.
