Cookie has been diagnosed as probably diabetic. Our vet has suggested we manage it with diet. So were just wondering if anyone else has a diabetic piggie (I think Glynis's Velvet is) and could offer any diet recomendations?

Have had a look on Guinea Lynx at the sortable food chart for ideas on foods sugar contents. But was wondering if anyone follows a particular diet or has any tips?

well, at least you have a diagnosis, its onwards and upwards now.

Dont know about the diet sorry. xx

I am very sorry for that diagnosis! Glynis has a diabetic piggy, so she is probably the best one to ask.

Poor piggy - could I just ask what were Cookies symptoms - drinking for England or other symptoms as well? one of my rescue piigies is a huge drinker but weight is stable,so was just wondering.

Thanks for your replies and concern x

Cookie is still the happy, inquisitive pig she has always been and is very well in herself. I done a fair bit of reading today and have altered her veggies slightly.. Will speak to Glynis at some point when things are better with Velvet.

Her water consumption has gone up and she has had a few recurrent UTI's. The past few dipstick tests on urine to check how we were doing with blood have shown Glucose present. Our vet said that some UTI's can occasionally show Glucose but now that has cleared up (no blood, touch wood) we are still left with Glucose the only doubt is the lack of ketones. So we are gonna change diet and test again in a few weeks, see how we are doing.

When it gets hotter, piggies do drink more so I didn't think anymore of the increased water consumption from Cookie.

Aw sorry to hear about Cookie :( hopefully with slight diet changes she'll be on the right track :)

Hope Megan is OK now too! :)

Aww, thank you! I'm sure she'll be fine. She loves her hay so she'll get plenty of different types, I'll just have to sneak Treacle some watermelon when Cookie's not around :))

Megan is having some poo tested, so hoping to get to the bottom (no pun intended) of whats going on. We have solid poo's tonight though, it seems she can only eat Parsley and green beans - very strange. Thanks for thinking of her x

How is Tiffypig?

Aw bless haha, hay of every flavour! At least she'll get some variation there :))

Hope the results come back OK! Though solid poos after beans and parsley sounds promising :) if she's anything like ours, inhaling parsley is something she's probably quite enjoying haha!

Tiffypig is OK thanks :) refusing recovery food now but eating quite a lot else so the vet isn't too worried, which is always good! And she's now enjoying some lovely fresh grass and still making solid(ish) poos! Haha.

Fingers crossed for our poorlys :)

No advce i am afraid, but i will keep an eye on this as i could learn a thing or 2 i am sure.

Just wanted to send you and the girls some cuddles.

CharlieH, I am glad tiffypig seems better, more healing vibes on heir way

x

Oh mate i'm so sorry to hear about little Cookie!
Dam.....
and i'm never too busy to chat no matter what ok? RIGHT x>>

With Velvet she was eating and drinking normally, she's always been a drinker.....her first signs were cataracts! she didn't present with any other signs!
I too did the reading on GL and also that lady who had the two diabetic piggies.

So i changed diet, i took out corn, carrots, beetroot and fruits.
For some reason when Velvet has a UTI her glucose often drops! I've not measured it of late cause of her other problems.
Her diet is peppers/capsicum, green round beans, snow peas, cucumber, silverbeet/chard, asian greens (bok choy etc..) If i do have to give her cranberry juice it's watered down HEAPS, literally only a couple of drops in 15mls.

The strips i use to check her glucose are for that purpose only ...... not the dual type.

If there's anything else you want to know please just pm me anytime, i'll try to answer if i can :)

Please give darling little Cookie all our love XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Thanks Glynis! x x
That was really helpful, we didn't want to pm you while you are going through this rough time with beautiful Velvet. If we have any more queries, we'll be in touch.

Cookie would like to send you a pigture of her mid yawn for all your advice. Rach & I, the Girls and Miss Moo would like to send lots of love to Velvet

Here's what I do with my diabetic degu and I should think the principles are sound:

Plenty of meadow hay, limit pellets to the recommendation on the pack and dark green leafy vegetables.

A little weight loss and as much exercise as you can persuade him to do would help if he is currently a good weight, but not if he's been losing weight.

Sorry to hear this, I don't know much about diabetic pigs, but kisses to Cookie x)

Oh love please don't worry about that....... always available -c

I did forget too that i do give broccoli and the leaves and cauliflower.
I tried to get Velvet to do more exercise but i found it was stressing her out (cause of the cataracts) so just see how you go......always worth a try tho! Velvet is essentially a more chillaxed piggie who'd prefer to laze around rolleyes

Dear Cookie...........................uh oooooooooooooooh ......oh heck she's a goner..........yup ..........KERPLUNK!

Mummy has well you know whated again rolleyes so me Velvet says thankyou very muchly Cookie for your wishes, me wants you to know that you wont starve on your new diet, you'll feel a bit better, just be a good pigglie and eat up lots n lots of hay and be good for your lovely mummy and daddy XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Loves to Cookie xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Thanks for this info Glynis, will get aome in as we only have the normal in stock. We checked Cookie's wee after a blood scare on Monday (she's had recurrent UTI or Cystitis) and the Glucose seemed to be less than before so we are heading in right direction with diet.

Love to you and your girls especially Velvet x>> x>>

it might also be helpful if you stay away from fruits and other sugary foods like carrots, apples, banana etc. try sugar free pellets just like vitakraft. it is the most common food mix in the Philippines. Hope cookie gets well soon!
