Specialist Cookie Is Ill! Fur Problems?

Thanks a lot for your advice! I'll monitor her weight carefully and keep you guys updated, just given her first course of medicine for today. She's munching away happily which makes me feel better.

I'll ring the vets again in a few days after I know what the weight is doing.

Have a picture of both of mine (Cookie is the white and brown one, Smudge is the black and white one) playing indoors for a while.

aww cute furballs :luv::luv::luv:

I have Ellie who was about 6.5+ yrs at the time. She kept suffering reoccurring urinary tract infections with blood &sometimes heavy bleeding when she pooped.
None of the other classic signs such as -hair loss, crusty nipples &dominant behavior.

my vet told me my only option was to spay- but she wouldn't do a spay on such an old piggy! Due to general anaesthetic risks etc.

It was determined it was an ovarian cyst by a non intrusive, reasonably cheap ultrasound scan.
Ellie was fully conscious throughout&I was fascinated watching all the movement &bits n pieces at work!
A walnut sized lump was found.

So I suggested after research (mainly on here) could the (hcg)chorulon hormone injections be tried?

The vet researched it a bit &spoke to the drug manufacturer to find out dosage etc whilst I was there.
Its actually a cattle licensed drug. But a signing of a disclaimer/permission solved that.

The drugs were ordered&came 2-3days later. 1injection into the leg muscle (&lots of wheeking!) &some cucumber.
Then 7-10days later a repeat of the process.
Touchwood ellie has had no bleeding since &that was about March 2014 now I think.

The jabs were £20 ish each I think maybe less &there was a possibility of having a 3rd but the vet didnt in the end.

Consultation fee, metacam painkiller for a few days if needed &ultrasound so not even expensive considering. But well worth it :)

The cyst didnt seem to shrink but the bleeding has stopped.

Make sure she has a painkiller if needed, apparently ovarian cysts are very painful in humans. Might make her more comfortable.
Ellies 2 consultations, jabs, ultrasound &metacam came to no more than £60 at the time.

Although my vet isn't an exotics specialist &doesn't charge steep prices.
the vet locator (at the top of page) has a few recommended piggy savvy vets near you ,https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-vet-locator/

@biscandmatt had dealings with ovarian cysts so might come up with some other ideas for you. Xx

Ellie has just had a second batch of two injections as she was puffing up & the cysts seemed to have started grown again, she is now over 7 1/2yrs old & although steadily losing weight she is still happy munching away & enjoying life :)

I know others have had no joy with these but in my case it worked wonders &I would definitely try again.
Good luck with your furball baby &let us know how you get on.

Speedy recovery Cookie from Ellie, Grace & I.xx

we had similar issues with maisie. she lost weight, and had uti's which she couldn't fully clear because of the cysts. she didn't have any of the more common cyst symptoms and the cysts were small but obviously causing her issues so she was started on the hcg injections. for her, two injections 7-10days apart. there are options before a spay is needed in alot of cases. it depends on the cysts though and i would strongly advise seeing an exotics specialist for this issue. if you'd like to read more, then my threads about maisie go into more detail. it's not nice to know they have something but not all cysts cause issues so just because she has them, it doesn't necessarily mean it is those causing the issue. and if this is the first time she has been wet and has possible bladder issues, then i definitely wouldn't go rushing into trying to deal with the cysts by spaying. at least not before going to an exotics vet anyway. hope this helps and i've understood what has been going on :)

Thanks a lot. I'm just hoping with the medicine it'll help clear her system out and we can deal with the cysts as they're not causing her pain right now. I'm hoping her medicine will help her gain weight so we don't have to go rushing into surgery and I can enjoy what time I have left with her.

I'm just really upset and not really sure what to do... she's still eating well and taking her medicine and I don't know what else I can do...

I am so sorry you and Cookie are having to go through this. I see like me you are in the Bristol area.
If you decide on a second opinion from an exotics specialist I am very impressed with Polly at High Croft, Whitchurch, see vet locator for details.

The problem is that I can't GET there. I can't drive yet, although my next test is very soon; and my parents are very...irritating and not helpful.

Just gave Cookie her second round of meds and she was fighting me and then gobbling down hay the second she got back in her hutch so it gives me hope.

Its a shame you can't get there, I'd help if I could but I don't drive either. Very lucky I have a friend to help me. It's good that Cookie is eating her hay, I'm thinking of you both and have everything crossed for her.
Sorry about your parents I think some people find us piggie people hard to understand!
Good luck with your driving test.

Hi guys! Cookie has gained 13g overnight! She's now 806g; and she's on the grass with Smudge at the moment. This makes me feel a lot happier; is this a significant weight gain? Or is any weight gain a good sign in this phase? She's just looking a lot better today and demanding food! The medicine must be helping.

it is a good sign that she isn't losing any weight. Please be aware that the daily variance between a full/empty bladder and tummy can be as much as 30g, so the more often you weigh, the more up and down you'll get.

Thanks for the warning; I'll weigh her again tomorrow and see if she goes down again, and just keep monitoring her.

Bubble slightly bursted but however she seems more active and lively and that makes me happy x3

That is good news! Ideally, you always weigh once daily at the same time in the feeding cycle, either before dinner or breakfast or always at the same time after a meal. That helps to eliminate the little swings during the day as much as possible.

I try to weigh her at the same time every day if that helps? I could start weighing her before I give her breakfast now?

Just keep it to the same rhythm! Be aware that the weight tends to be a lower when you weigh on an empty tummy than if you weigh on a full one, but essentially what you are looking out for is either a steady slow weight loss day upon day or a sudden major weight loss in the matter of just a few days.

i feel you about the travel to the vets. my mum, dad and all three brothers drive, and none will give me lifts very often. :( i can't use buses either so a taxi is our only option and the vets is 40mins each way, and then they wait aswell. sometimes the taxi is more than the vets! - could you use taxi's and agree a set price before? that is what we do and we have the same two taxi drivers we use and who i feel comfortable with. :)

it's your choice obviously but i really would see the exotics vets if you can, or maybe at least have your vets consult with them? i just think it makes all the difference sometimes having people treat them who work with them day in day out. :)

I could always do that! I do have some family members that usually help me out if I need it; however they're on holiday at the moment, so I gotta wait until they're home again.

I'm considering getting a second opinion for Cookie if she doesn't improve.

least you have options if needed and cookie sounds like she is doing well for the moment and not losing weight which is a good sign. :)

Not good. We're down to 780g before feeding this morning. Tough blow, she's loosing weight now.

I was considering giving her a boost with the critical care I have left. Any suggestions on that?

If she's not eating properly then it might be worth trying her with some critical care, just to boost her up.

I really hope she pulls through.

The problem is, Cookie is eating very well. She's just having a massive problem absorbing the food.

Up to 787g before feeding today. Fingers crossed.

Aww bless :/ this was what happened with us, we were feeding Sheamus often but it didn't seem to be doing anything and he lost 100 kg in 3 days and ended up lighter than your sow sadly, hence why we had him pts, the vet said at that weight he may not pull through surgery and if he did he may not heal properly, I just didn't want to see him go through any more pain. It really has had a big affect on my health.

Do you know what your going to do?

I don't. I have her on my lap now, bless her, she's chewing on the end of the syringe and she's just...

But she looks so skinny, I don't want to put her through surgery, I don't think she'll survive the weight she is.
I feel like a horrible owner, keeping her alive at such. Skinny weight; she's been herself up to now but this morning she was huddled up with smudge, not even a usual squeak of hello and feed me... She did squeak at me while weighing while I was rustling something but that's about it. I feel horrible. Wanting to keep her with me and keep pushing for more time.

I'll see how she goes over the weekend. If her eating slows, or she looses more...then I guess I'll let go. I don't want to let go; I'm hoping she'll recover but..I don't want to keep her going like this. You can see how skinny she's gone from this photo.

Aww what a cute piggie. I know that feeling all too well.. it's horrible because we grow close to them and love them as they are part of our family.

Have you tried taking her to a different vet to get a second opinion?

No. I probably wouldn't be able to get to a different vet; and my mother probably wouldn't let me go because I'd be wasting money and all that.

I dunno what to do.

What about the PDSA? You would need to get housing benefits or council tax reduction. I THINK but I'm not 100% sure on this, that the RSPCA can offer help as well, but like I said I'm not 100% sure on that, you'd need to look it up. It's just something I've seen on the TV.

Hmmm @ your Mum.. it's not wasting money, it's helping a sick animal :/

I don't live alone. I'm saving up to move out, but I don't think it can happen right now as my part time job doesn't pay much. Even though I'm 18; they control my actions. For example; I can't decide if I'm going to university of not. Apparently I have to go and I. Can pick either this course or that course. A car is my first priority right now as I want to be able to come and go as I please.

I don't know. Mum is the kind of person to blame me if the guinea pigs die. For example, I had a baby that passed away due to complications while I left them in my fathers care and she blamed me and told me it was my fault that she died and all that.

Aww well she ought not to do that :/ I'm a Mum too, my son is 21...

Can you go to anyone else for help?
