Specialist Cookie Is Ill! Fur Problems?

Nowhere near :(

But, Cookie and Smudge have now come out of the bedroom area, chatting and nibbling at some hay and nuggets so that's making me feel slightly better.

ooo that sounds good :D just keep making sure she's eating and drinking if not then give her some crit care, maybe she'll be ok until you can get her into the vet on Monday.

Yeah; I've seen her eating a lot of grass this afternoon and seen them have a munch on the celery I've put in the bedroom with them, is it possible they were just resting for a few hours after all that munching on grass?
I'm holding out hope, I still need to give her her next medicine and I might give ehr some critical care at the same time.

Yep! I mean I have seen her munching on some celery and lots of grass and some hay this morning ao I'm trying to not be too worried.

Oh! That's a really good idea! I'll go and get her some, but only a little as I know that it can make their tummies funny x3 if I don't have any then they can have a nice bowl of grass x3

Ahhh! Ok maybe that's why then. Did the vet advise you about giving her probitotics?

Oil?

When I was giving the metacam to Sheamus last year when he had a uri and ear infection, it was making him sleepy and not want to eat much, the vet took him off of it in the end, I'm not suggesting you do that though! I'm just saying what happened to Sheamus. Maybe it's one of the meds making her sleepy.

What you can do at home with a URI:
- any ill piggy needs to come inside, preferably with its companion
- place a bowl of steaming water next to the cage to help ease the breathing
- start topping up with hand feed; if you haven't got recovery food at home, you can mush up pellets with boiled, cooled water and syringe that. Antibiotics are appetite dampeners/killers, as they also kill off the good bacteria in the guts and not just the bad ones in the airways. Also syringe water, as the need to breathe comes before the need to drink and thirdly the need to eat.
Here is our step-by-step guide how to: https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/complete-hand-feeding-guide.115359/
- please see a vet as soon as possible if your piggy is lethargic, off food or if the breathing is getting worse. You can get your own vet's out of hours cover from their answering machine.
- please try to stay as calm as possible for the sake of your piggy.

Thank you, but I am 100% sure that Cookie does not have a URI. She's fine breathing, and is eating and drinking again. She was just a little dozey, for a couple of hours and scared the hell out of me! But I WILL keep an eye out for any signs or being lethargic. She's currently running downstairs for food.

I'll save this information so I can come back to it! You two are the best <3

Cookie's still with me this morning. Gained another 6g, we're now back on the weight when she first went to the vets at 796g.

I think she needs to go back to the vets anyway. She can't keep her fur clean, it's going all greasy again. I'm happy to bath her whenever she needs it...but it could be something the vets missed. They're open tomorrow so I'll be able to call and ask for advice.

She's more active overall today, squeaking a hello and running around and eating. Smudge is sticking very close to her.

That's good, it is worth taking her back though :) It really is a shame you aren't able to register with the PDSA.

Let's hope she continues to put weight on and feel better :)

I think it does look slightly greasy and also a bit fluffed up which happens when they are poorly. If you gently rub her hair the wrong way does it stay upright or fall back into place?

Some of it falls back into place, the other parts fall back. Could it be skin problems or is it just like this because she's ill? Shall I keep bathing her when it gets particularly bad?

I don't know if she is or not in all honesty, I'd speak to the vet before giving her another bath, so they can see it themselves. Make sure you tell them about it though just in case they miss it again.

They are very cute guineas :)

I asked the vet about it and she just said "it's not as nice as I would like" and agreed a bath would make her a little more comfortable as it was worse than this when I first took her!

I'm just not sure if I should bath again if it becomes more greasy or let the vet see it again.
