Today we took Cookie to the vets for a health check, due to Dougie suddenly passing away last week. We also went to speak to the vet (cavy savvy) about rescuing a guinea pig as she runs a rescue.

But unfortunately it looks like Cookie is unable to have a friend for sometime. Cookie has always had runny eyes and we have never been able to get down to the bottom of it. We removed sawdust from his hutch when he was a baby to make sure he doesn't have an allergy, but that didn't work, his been on antibiotics throughout his lifetime (Baytril) which only worked temporarily.

Due to Snowball dying at a young age and now Dougie (both around two years), both from respiratory problems we are now concerned Cookie is a carrier of some form of infection/disease, therefore we need to be responsible and cant risk housing him with another guinea pig until we have got down to the bottom of it.

So for now Cookies got to have lots of human cuddles and attention, along with his Septrin Paediatric medication twice a day for two weeks:( I hate seeing him on his own, but he seems to behaving ok at the moment.

I am very sorry for the bad news, but it is much better to be safe than sorry, first and foremost! I hope that you can find a congenial friend for Cookie afterwards!

Sorry to hear Cookie is poorly, he is in good hands with you. Did you see Rosie? Hope you can get to the bottom of it

Yes, would hate to lose another so young! Has anyone heard of a guineas pig being a carrier?

Poor cookie, but the vet is right. I am sure I have heard of this before, will find out and get back to you with names of conditions.

Me and my vet have talked about this a few months ago. She thinks like rabbits they can carry things but not exhibit symptoms so like pasteurella in rabbits. I have one who lived with a piggy who ended up with a uri brought on by stress from an underlying cause, he never caught it and sadly his cage mate passed away a month later of the other cause. I quarantined him for 3 weeks and vet checked him over and gave him all clear. He moved in with another boy, who came down with an uri within a few weeks, again the other piggy never caught it. About 3 months after he had a snotty nose so took him to the vets but vet said he was clear but as a precaution we had him on a course of strong anti biotics (ronaxon) for 3 weeks along with metacam. Since then he has gained weight and been right as rain. Another piggy has now moved in with them too and he has been in there for 3 months and not caught anything. So piggies have an immunity to it though.
