Corneal ulcer

As some of you may know Ginger has a corneal ulcer. I took her to the vets after 4 days of Tiacil eye drops and they said the ulcer had halved in size. She has now been having eye drops for 7 days and her eye is still blue and looks bloodshot in the evenings. Does anyone know how long they can take to heal and when the blueness will disappear.I am getting anxious as the eye drops are her only chance otherwise she will have to be put to sleep because of her age.
 
the ulcer might be going but the blueness sometimes takes time 2 go so leave it a bit longer and see wat hapens try giv hope n not feel so bad O0 O0 O0

Keep trying with the drops I would say. Surely no need to pts for an eye ulcer? If youre not happy with your vets options you could always get a 2nd opinion :)
 
I have just had two piggies with eye ulcers, the Tiacil didn't work that well , my vet gave me Chloromycetin and it cleared the worst one in less than a week

Yes chloromycetin is very good for eye ulcers, my boss is our eye speacialist in the vets i work at and we do tend to use it alot, its worth asking your vet for some. Hope it gets better love sue
 
Please don't have this piggie destroyed. I do not see how this can be justified.

i totally agree with this, if a person was going blind you would not consider terminating their life. a guinea pig can survive with one eye. please get a second opinion! i don't like a vet when they suggest to terminate the piggy because of a sore eye. :tickedoff: sending you both hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-* good luck ginger :smitten:
 
Oh Boy, poor Ginger! I didn't know piggies got eye ulcers. I hope she feels better soon. Is it affecting her vision? Ricky and myself are sending hugs and kisses to Ginger and hope the ulcers heal up soon! Feel better Ginger! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :-* :-* :-* :-*
 
I know people say not to put her to sleep if the treatment doesn't work but she is 8 years old and I feel it would be kinder to do this rather than her go through the stress and recovery at her age. Can anyone see where I am coming from?
 
Try the ointment in my other post, my one piggies eye was awful and it cleared in less than a week, at least give her a chance.

Sorry, not at all. Never end a pig's life because of age. If I were you I would be saying how fantastic it is to have a pig of this age (you must have looked after her very well) instead of trying to find an excuse to end her life.
 
One of my piggies once had an ulcer on the eye. It does take time but you will get there in the end. I think it was about a month before my piggies eye completely recovered. It seems as though Ginger's eye has already improved lots. Don't give up! xx
 
i can understand that you don't want to put her through the stress of a sore eye, but a sore eye is to my knowledge not a life threatening condition. give her time for it to heal. and treasure every moment you have with ginger. sending hugs :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-*
 
I'm sure that one of the ointments suggested will cure her eye. She's far too special to lose just because of a poorly eye. Most of us would be so happy and proud to have such a senior piggy. It shows how well you have looked after her.
 
I'm sorry if I have offended anyone on this site by what I have said. Its just I have sat in tears trying to work out what is the best for her. Of course I want to give her every opportunity to get better. I have cried reading all of your thoughts - its just trying to work out what is best. Thanks for all your words and i'll keep you posted.
 
rw3399 - I can see where you are coming from. I am all for trying to give a piggie the best life possible but if they are old and will end up in more pain and distress is it fair on the piggie? I was 14yrs old when i had to decide to get my piggie PTS. She had a stroke and was unwell, the vet said they could operate and give medication but the chances of getting better were slim and she'd go through a lot of pain. It was the hardest decision i have had to make regarding my piggies and i still believe it was the best thing to do. She had suffered enough and I wasn't going to make her suffer more. It was very quick, she didn't make any noises as she was so out of it already and i held her and clapped her through it all. You have to make the decision for your piggie and you. Discuss things with your vet and dont feel guilty whatever you decide. x
 
The vet has already told me to put her to sleep because she has had a stroke so her back legs don't work very well, she has now got bumblefoot on her front paws (i've been speaking to Chrissie fro Gorgeous Guineas and she's really helpful) so Ive now got one of her creams to use and now her eye. It's just so difficult. I will continue with treatment and if good, I will suggest the other medication mentioned on this post. Thanks for your support.
 
No matter what you decide to do you'll have support from people on here. Poor little girl not got is easy. Fingers crossed for her. x
 
am so sorry :'( :'( :'( if i have upset you or made you feel guilty with my comments. i did NOT know ginger had had a stroke, or that she had other problems. i do understand how hard this must be for you after having ginger for 8 years, she has been your friend, companion and loved pet. whatever you decide it will be the best for ginger and you will have my support in whatever you decide! Unfortunately some vets (not any I have been to) are over-keen on having animals destroyed. Don't be clouded by what he says.

I would always choose life.

Hi rw3399....so sorry to hear about all of Ginger's troubles. You must be so stressed. It's always so heartbreaking to see your little piggies in pain. Whatever you decide, Ricky and I will be here to support you. If your piggie lives a life with pain, it is no fun for the piggie. Does the vet say if she will get better? I actually need some help - I'ma bit concerned about her eye today. I put the drops in this morning but have just come home and noticed there is like thick white muck in the corner of the eye and just under the eye. Does this mean there's more infection or that the ulcer has burst? The eye drops are quite thick so has matted some of the fur under the eye.
 
I don't think there is a proble, it's just me being a worrier. I think the muck is when the solution has come out of her eye and has set. I'm so silly! :)
