Hi guys,

it‘s been way too long since I‘ve been on here, I‘ve missed you all very much. Up until today, we‘ve been doing quite well but today Cornelius (5,5 years) is very unwell.

Bit of backstory: About 3 weeks ago I noticed that he has gone completely deaf. It happend over the course of maybe 4 weeks that he went from hearing normally, to not hearing all too well to completely deaf. He also started to have some off-days where he wouldn’t move much, wouldn’t be as interested in food and sleep a lot. The other days he was his normal, chipper self though. He‘s also gotten more boney and very slowly lost a bit of weight - nothing my vet was too concerned with though as nothing was obviously wrong so we just put that down to old age.

This morning he suddenly wasn‘t eating properly, didn’t want any pellets, and just wasn’t himself. At dinner tonight he was sniffing food and biting off a few pieces of veggies but also not really eating. That’s when I first noticed that he seems to struggle to swallow. I got him out to support feed, as we always do, when someone‘s poorly but it is impossible. He can swallow tiny amounts but it takes a really long time (we managed 4ml in 20 minutes). I gave him about 0,3ml of the syringe which he took, tried to swallow and a second later he retched it back up and spit it out. Back in the cage you could see he was struggling to swallow the stuff that was still somewhere between mouth and stomach. He is also retching and coughing when he tries to eat too much in the cage. When he‘s not running through the cage he is hunched up in a corner, grinding his teeth. He doesn’t seem to have a problem with chewing, just swallowing.

I am taking him to the vet as soon as possible tomorrow. Unfortunately, we don’t have emergency vets I can trust with a guinea pig where I live in Austria. In the meantime, does anyone have an idea what we are looking at? My pigmum gut tells me it might not be good news. :( Thanks in advance, me & my poorly boy

I’m so sorry to hear that.

Sadly not being able to swallow is not a good sign. It usually means there is a blockage of some sort somewhere along the system and that the body is unfortunately shutting down.
We, of course, cannot know for certain what is happening though

We would advise that If there is any vet which you may think can help (even if they aren’t specialist) this evening then it would be best to seek emergency help now if at all possible. Of course we fully understand that that just isn’t an option in some countries.

This isn’t a nice guide to have to link in but it may be helpful to you.
Sending hugs and fingers crossed for Cornelius

Is My Guinea Pig Dying?
Thank you very much, I suspected as much. It is so hard seeing him run around the cage like normal but unable to eat. He looks so poorly in one moment and in the next he‘s just plodding around the cage as if everything was ok. :( I have tried to support feed him again but after 1,5ml he can‘t swallow it anymore. Is it normal for them to still be happy while their body is shutting down?

I have tried to reach every vet in the area but no luck. :( I am trying to make sure he‘s comfortable and call the first vet that opens first thing in the morning. Thank you for the guide ❤️

I’m sorry to read this, thinking of you and Cornelius during this difficult time. Hope you manage to reach a vet in the morning.

I'm very sorry. Also living in Austria with my fair share of emergency vet visits, it's always better to wait for a vet who knows about guinea pigs.
Sending lot's of healing vibes!

I'm so sorry 😞 I've had a couple who have had difficult in swallowing, one with a severe URI and I basically had to allow her to go into stasis for the first 24 hours or so while the antibiotics worked just enough to enable her to eat, but she was gasping which made attempting food more dangerous, for a good few hours I was having to put 0.1ml of food in at a time very, very dilute with water so it was less thick, after a while she could take a tiny bit of food and use a trickle of water to help swallow.

The other had a calcified mass on her thymus and was obstructing things (as well as an enlarged heart and lung tumour!) For her, I managed to get into a rhythm of getting her to take food from the syringe with her head stretched up and outwards, luckily she was very cooperative and wanted to take the food. I'm not sure this would be possible they not eagerly taking the syringe food. But it's worth trying, if it's a blockage it may ease it a little.

Hopefully one of those techniques may be of use to you. Unfortunately not swallowing does indicate something quite serious, but hopefully in your case it is something that can be resolved. I hope all goes well at the vet when you're able to get to one, I can empathise with having struggles finding a decent out of hours guinea pig vet.

Thank you everyone for your lovely replies - they mean the world to me, as always ❤️

I managed to reach my usual vet via Whatsapp today and she immediately took us in. It looks like his tounge has become trapped by his molars but we currently don’t know if that happened because he has been struggling with eating properly for a while or if that is the root cause of the issue. She will sedate him tomorrow to do an x ray and, if that comes back clear, she will fix his molars and we will see how he goes. Should she find something concerning on the x ray, she will help him over the bridge while he is sedated.

I am, of course, going away for the weeknd on Friday morning (they just know, don‘t they?) so if he‘s pulling through tomorrow, he will stay at the vets until Monday to be looked after properly. Please cross all fingers and paws for my little man, I would so love to more time with him. ❤️ A photo of the little soldier during his cage clean:

I just spoke to the vet - little man‘s x-rays came back clear so she fixed his teeth and apparently he‘s already eaten a bit which stayed down! She says if there‘s nothing else amiss that we missed, he should be ok 🤩 He‘s going to stay with her over the weekend and I am to call them on Monday to check if he‘s ready to come home. Please keep your fingers & paws crossed for little man to keep improving ❤️

Hi @stef.trg Lovely to see you again 🙂

I’m sorry Cornelius has given you a fright but I’m glad he’s seen the vet, that you have a diagnosis, that he’s been treated and that he’s doing well

I am keeping everything crossed that he makes a full recovery and can come home after the weekend 🤞

He’s a handsome chap 🥰

Great news

Long overdue update 🤩 Little man is back home and feeling better than ever. He‘s annoying his wife and, most importantly, eating like there‘s no tomorrow. He‘s such a fighter and I am so proud of him ❤️

He‘s to go back to the vet on 23/12 for a check up and we will have to make sure he puts on some weight again because at the moment he is very very thin. If anyone has any suggestions that could help him gain a bit, I‘m all ears :)

Thanks for all your prayers and kind words once again. This community has so often helped me through the worst of the worst and I am so grateful for all of you ❤️

That’s brilliant news. Glad Cornelius is on the mend. How much weight did he lose? It can take them months to regain it again. Some don’t and it becomes their new weight.

He lost about 100g in total, although he‘s gained about 25g of it back. He‘s always been a tiny (comparison of him next to Pewpsy below) and light boy of only around 860g but he‘s so slim and boney now. I hope he‘ll manage to gain some back.

Wow a tiny boy. 🥰

Weigh him often for a few weeks to make sure he’s gaining little and often.

Some mashed banana either served in a shallow dish or mixed with Critical Care is good for some weight gain.
A small dish of raw oats with grated carrot or sweet potato also helps.
Glad Cornelius is doing so well now

Thanks for giving us an update, it's so wonderful that he's doing ok. I second critical care in a bowl, with or without banana. Some of my oldies have needed it daily on a permanent basis to keep their weight up.

Great news. I give my older piggies oats and bananas to help keep their weight on.xx

My darling boy Cornelius stopped being able to eat again on Saturday so I took him back to the vet yesterday. She attempted to fix his teeth again today as they were overgrown but his little heart wasn’t strong enough to pull through the anaesthesia 😭 I am heartbroken. I never for a second thought that I might not see him anymore, I didn’t even say a proper goodbye yesterday. My poor little baby. I will do a rainbow bridge thread later today.

I am so sorry that you lost Cornelius.
Losing a piggy under anaesthetic is so hard as it feels very abrupt.
Holding you in my heart ♥️
