Correct dose for septrin

Please can someone tell me the correct dose of septrin the vet has given me some for Gizmo and she said 1ml twice a day, but i have read on other threads 0.5ml twice a day. mallethead Gizmo is 1225g and the vet did weigh him.

I'm due to give him his first dose now but i want to be sure I'm giving him the correct dose. Also do i need a probiotic?

I have heard of quite a few pigs being given 1ml twice a day, although their infections were usually stubborn/chronic. Is it the paediatric suspension you've got?

A probiotic is worthwhile, Septrin is gentler on the system than Baytril but it's still an antibiotic after all.
 
On the bottle it says 12ml septrin paediatric susp. Which means i have enough for 6 days, should i see an improvement in 48 hours? By that i mean should he not be squeaking while weeing.

Which probiotic would you recommend, i shall get one today when i go out later.

Logically thinking here, the squeaking won't ease until the infection has cleared and the inflammation, so it could take nearer to the full 6 days before the squeaking stops for good. Having said that, it is a high dose for a mild infection, I would hope to see a notable reduction in the squeaking within 3 days.

Thanks. I done a home test of his urine and the only 2 things that came up were PH 8.5 which i have now read is normal in guinea pigs and protein which was 300 which is the highest on the scale, do you by any chance know what than means? As i can only find that in humans it means cysistis or UTI, but nothing for guinea pigs.

I shall take note of one of the probiotics and get one today. :)
 
Hiya my vet said that Septrin is very gentle and shouldn't need probiotics. frosty was 1.25kg and on 0.9mls twice a day.Billy is 1.4kg and on 1ml twice a day for his UTi which is quite bad
 
Did the vet say what caused the protein? Gizmo has no blood at all in his urine the only thing that came up was the protein and PH level.

He said the protien is normally indicative on UTI commonly cystitis. he said to try cranberry juice as well I said about sugar/sugar free he said in the small doses I shouldn't worry too much if it helps the discomfort. can sometimes indicate stones but usually UTI. he said if the test strip doesn't clear up in a week they will xray and check for stones. Hope this helps
 
vet also gave metacalm for the discomfort and billy has perked up quite a bit its been 4 days but he brightened up in 24 hours
 
Gizmo is very happy in himself so he doesnt have any metacam, he is his usually cheeky self. I'm going to see the cavy vet on Tues so I'm hoping that he can give me further advice if the protein levels in his urine come down and the septrin works. :)
