I have a question regarding corriander, as you may have noticed.

I keep reading its a great alternative to parsley, but I'm also a tad confused. Here are my questions

Is it ok to feed daily?

How much should be fed (this goes for herbs in general) Today and yesterday they both had a little more corriander than normal. Normally if i have it i cut it from a plant in the kitchen, but there was a small bag reduced at work yesterday, so i got that and they had half today half yesterday. (it was probably a good handfull between two of them, i felt it was too much and wont feed that much again)

My piggies ALWAYS seem to have cacium deposits on the fleece, I try to watch what i feed them but i am a little confused over quantities, and what veg to feed etc.

Usually they have some romain, or other lettuce, a stick of celery chopped up, a smallish piece of cucmber each, a think slice of bell pepper halved, and then either kale, spring greens, parsely/corrander, carrot or brocilli, (i tend to rotate those). Occasionally i get a salad bag cheap, and they have a cup of that and some pell pepper each (usually two days in a row as otherwise it goes off)

Any tips?

Any and all help apreciated.

I have a chart which says based on 25g of coriander/parsley
Coriander has 6.8mg vit c, ca: p ratio of 1.4
Parlsey has 33.2mg vit c, ca: p ratio of 2.4 and it has 425mg of oxalates.

I do find that most high vit c food are also high in ca:p ratio and oxalates. There are exceptions such as peppers and broccoli.

I have a chart with vit c levels, ca: p
ratio and vit a and oxalates levels on my pc. If * want a copy, pm me ** email address as I'm not allowed to post it on the forum.

I did read on here that corriander can be fed daily. But I can't for the life of me remember where or who posted about it. But I believe I'm remembering this correctly as I remember thinking, 'great, i don't need to throw the bag in the fridge away' lol!

With regards to calcium, the things I try to feed only twice a week as I know they're high in calcium are parsley, broccoli stalks and spinich.

However, I do feed my lot a few slices of beet root each once a fortnight as a precautionary thing as the acidicness of the beetroot neutralises the calcium and evens it out, if that makes sense. The calcium desposits are now much less. :)

Mine wont even touch beetroot, but thanks anyway! :)

I am carefull with what i give them i just get so confused, Is it supposed to be ANY of the calcium rich veg twice a week (as in, if i give kale and parsley that uses it up) Or is it suposed to be each twice a week... *Sigh*

Obviously need to cut the calcium down a little more. :).. somehow.

We often fed Coriander daily and did so with our little girl Putt.

Laura put a great thread up which is a sticky on the Ca:P ratio and included lists of what can be daily fed etc... It is well worth a read http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=30297

Guinea Lynx also has a great food chart that can be sorted depending on Nutrition value http://www.guinealynx.info/chart.html#chart

Hope this helps

:) Thanks so much. I had not seen that first link before and its very helpfull!

I often feed coriander daily, about a sprig per piggy; it is the best fresh herb to give on a regular basis. Parsley and dill are much more a special occasional treat!

I also like the Guinea Lynx Charts. I keep the Vegetable Chart on my fridge. Have you tried adding some of the more unusual veggies such as raddichio, escarole and chicory greens? I have also been able to buy some very fresh carrots with the tops attached. We eat the carrots, the girls get the tops. I make a salad with small pieces and divide it into two piles so both girls get a little bit of everything. I do give cilantro, romaine and a little raddichio most days and then rotate some of the other veggies in the mix. I can't wait until grass is back on the menu. It will be better for the girls and so much simplier than this winter balancing act.

ALWAYS seem to have cacium deposits on the fleece
Is this the little white spots? I have this all the time. I feed a very varied died, the get a mix of cauli leaves, broccoli, different cabbages(green only), peppers, celery, tomatoes, carrots every single evening and of course hay and dry food.
None of the piggies seem to drink much though.

What am I doing wrong?
Sorry to hijake the thread

Dont be sorry. I'm going to have a go with the Ca:P thing and see if that helps even it out abit. Although it doesnt seem that different to what I already feed them. :/ Nevermind.

Reduce the amount of cabbages and crucifers (cauli and broccoli). Give just one or two of them per day.

Make sure that your portions of veg are not too big - 1 cupful per piggy per day (in as many servings as you like) is enough. Guinea pigs feed mainly on dry grass in the wild; with fresh plants making a welcome top up; that is how their guts work best. That is why hay is so important. Veg and pellets are just top ups for essential vitamins and minerals.

Not all piggies are great drinkers.
