Hi,

My guinea pig Damien (don't ask!) has a big crater on his rump which was oozing gunk, so I took him to the vet tonight. They cleaned it out and said it was probably his scent gland or a cyst, and it would keep coming back unless it was removed. They have booked him in for Thursday, but one thing I didn't ask was how much it would cost.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum, apologies for the delay in responding to you.

Costs will vary hugely between practices, and even between vets depending on their level of skill and the method in which they choose to carry out the procedure. I would expect to pay a minimum of £50, it may come to a little less, but is likely to come to more if a general anaesthetic is used.

Do ensure you trust your vet fully, and do ask them any questions you wish to, as Damien's owner and in effect spokesperson, you are entitled to understand what will be done and to ask about post op care and costs and such.

Costs are going to vary depending on the vet... I would call up and ask. One of my pigs had a similar surgery over the summer, but I'm in Canada so the currencies are not going to be easily comparable.
As for the surgery itself, with my pig Linney they first tried draining the cyst/abscess and put her on an antibiotic, but that didn't work... it kept filling back up, and the skin overtop of the abscess died and flaked off, leaving the top pocket of abscessed skin exposed. Yuck! So she was then put under a general gas anasthesia and the vet shaved the area, removed the abscess in it's entirety, and resutured the skin. She continued antibiotics for another two weeks, and that was it. She had quite an incision at first, but six months later we can't even find the scar anymore (especially since she' s a shetie cross with longish fur in the back!)

HTH, and hope you pig's surgery goes well!
