Hi!
(Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, I really had no idea where to put it 🙈 )

With my mental health seeming to finally have stabilized, after many years of the occasional ups and many many downs, I'm finally starting to think I could possibly get a place of my own at some point (will still probably take a year or so for me to be completely ready for keeping myself alive by myself, but I like to get planning done way in advance!) and naturally the cost of owning piggies has been on my mind. At the moment I pay for none of the piggies expenses as I've got no income for the moment and my parents don't mind paying for the piggies as long as the piggies bring a smile to my face.

I've got four piggies, but the dream would be a few more as I love piggies (doubt there's anyone here who doesn't!) and I also get motivated by having another being dependent on me. When taking care of myself feels impossible I always still get up out of bed for these little guys! As I am a full time student, I will only have time for part time work, so I'd not have the biggest budget to spend. How much do you guys spend on food for the piggies? And around how much does the cost of food increase with adding another piggie to your family? (if anyone has any estimates) Also how much do you put away into a vet bill savings account if you have one? If there's any other costs with owning piggies feel free to add them too, any info is appreciated! ♥️

Thanks in advance!

*Take this with a grain of salt, because I’m in the US.*

Really, the food cost doesn’t go up that much for an extra piggy. About $2-$3 more per week for veggies, and if you buy bales of hay, hay cost doesn’t increase at all. You may run out of pellets sooner, depending on what bag size you get.

I buy a 40lb bale of hay once every two months. It costs $20.

A 10lb bag of pellets lasts me around 4-5 months. It costs about $47. Pellets are my most expensive purchase, but it’s worth it for the high quality! I use Sherwood Pet Health pellets.

In all, it costs about $45 a month to keep my three girls fed.

Hope this helps! ❤️

I’m in the UK. I have four animals (two piggies and two rabbits).

I buy a bale of hay from a farm and it costs around £8. It lasts around six weeks. I get through a lot of hay as mine all live out in sheds.

I spend probably £8-10 per week on veggies. However, I buy the lettuce, cucumbers and peppers and the humans eat them as well, so that cost is just a guess. Coriander I buy specifically for the piggies and rabbits (the humans don’t like it) and that is around £4 (4 packs a week).

I don’t feed pellets to the piggies.
(The rabbits do have pellets and a 2kg bag lasts probably two months as they don’t get many at all. About £6 for a 2kg bag).
The piggies do get some dried forage at times but I don’t always buy it as a routine thing year round. They’ll get some in winter but don’t tend to have any in summer.
