I have heard that guinea pigs can be given cough medicine for chesty wheezing is this so and has it worked for anyone?
I have a piggy that is very wheezy at times not all the time, he is happy in himself eating and drinking fine, not unwell - popcorning ect.
Peter Gurney recomends sudafed and garlic oil in his piggy potions book and i have heard of benylin too?
can anyone let me know please?

All good to use on pigs.
Olbas oil is also safe and effective.

I totally agreee with AP. Olbas oil is very good.

I have used Robutisson as well, just a tiny dose of 0.1 ml, because it is the one they hand over if you ask for a low sugar one for diabetics at the chemist! Mind you, they hate the taste. I must admit I always use olbas oil first and that generally works fine.

I have heard that Benylin is not good - I asked Vedra once if any cough medicine is safe, and Benylin was one she pointed out as unsafe, but I am unable to remember why. Buttercup Cough Syrup is a good one she mentioned.

I have several pigs who have random, unexplained, infrequent and short episodes of "grumbly"/raspy breathing. It's not allergies in my pigs' cases (though allergies can be to blame for such symptoms), it is related more to humidity/heat than anything.
Sudafed Expectorant, 0.2ml given twice a day clears it up no problem; sometimes even a one off dose is enough to stop the noisy breathing.

Just remember that these medicines don't treat the underlying condition, only the symptoms, so a full health check is worthwhile at the off.
